Chateau Trotanoy History, Overview

Chateau Trotanoy takes its name from either the French term, trop ennui. Which when it’s loosely translated means, too much to bother with, or too boring. Or, from a different meaning of “too hard to work.” It might be a difficult vineyard to work, but one taste shows the wines are clearly not boring.

The vineyards of Trotanoy were first planted in 1761. The property was owned in its formative years by the Giraud family, who were very successful landowners in the Right Bank of Bordeaux. It was the Giraud family that built the chateau that remains on the property today. At the start of the 19th century, the wines were sold under the name of Pomerol Giraud Cru de Trotanoy.

Even at that time, the wine of Trotanoy was well respected. In fact, Trotanoy was considered to be one of the top wines of the entire appellation. Only Vieux Chateau Certan was held in higher regard in those early, formative days.

Just before the start of the 20th century, the estate was much larger than it is today. At that time, it was approximately 25 hectares. Chateau Trotanoy was divided into multiple plots at the time. Additional parcels of Chateau Trotanoy were again culled from their vineyards and sold during the early part of the 20th century.

In the mid-1940s, following the end of World War 2, the direct descendants of the Giraud family sold Chateau Trotanoy to the Pecresse family. They did not hold the vineyard for very long. In 1953, the vineyards were acquired by Jean-Pierre Moueix, who bought the property from the Pecresse family.

The Style and Character of Chateau Trotanoy

Chateau Trotanoy can produce some of the finest wines in the Pomerol appellation. The wine ages well and display complexities, opulent personalities, and silky textures seldom found in almost any Bordeaux wine. The wines offer a unique, sensuous, concentrated profile with beautiful purity of fruit.

Most recently, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2015. 2016, 2018 and 2019 proved how magnificent this wine is.

The top vintages of Trotanoy can easily be described as pure decadence in a glass. It is a Pomerol wine so decadent, Caligula would have liked it. Trotanoy is expensive. But in the best vintages, the quality is there to support the price.

It’s a unique expression of Pomerol that is well worth the expense and effort to seek out. Trotanoy is a wine that ages well. Top vintages can easily age and evolve for 40 to 50 years or longer! Trotanoy needs at least a decade before it truly begins to express its character and complexity.

The best vintages of Trotanoy are: 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1982, 1975, 1971, 1970, 1964, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1950, 1947 and 1945. Chateau Trotanoy is able to age and develop for decades in the top vintages.

Chateau Trotanoy Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking

This 7.6-hectare vineyard of Trotanoy is planted to 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. This shows a slight increase in the amount of Merlot planted in the vineyards since the mid-1990s. The terroir of Trotanoy is rich black clay with gravel and important, deposits of iron in the soil. The best terroir of Chateau Trotanoy is situated on the Pomerol plateau which has an elevated peak of close to 40 meters.

The vineyard of Trotanoy can be divided into 2 separate parts with more gravel on one side, and more clay in the other part of the vineyard. At the peak elevations of the vineyard, which rises up to 36 meters, more gravel is found on the surface. Under the topsoil, you encounter various types of gravel, sand, and deposits of iron. As you travel further down the gentle slopes of the Trotanoy vineyard, you find more clay in the soil.

The micro-climate of Trotanoy is a bit warmer than you find at other estates, in part because of the elevated gravel slopes. For that reason, they often pick Trotanoy just a bit before their neighbors begin their harvest. The gravel soils are picked first, followed by the clay soils.

The age of the vines here average of 35 years, due to young plantings. But they also have older vines. There are parcels of Chateau Trotanoy with very old vines, some of which are more than 60 years of age, as many of their vines were not heavily damaged during the frost of 1956.

The vineyard of Trotanoy is planted to a vine density of 6,200 vines per hectare. Trotanoy is one of the last top estates in Pomerol to practice deep plowing. The reason is that it helps the roots delve deeper into the soils.

The vineyards of Chateau Trotanoy are located on the west side of the Pomerol plateau. The Right Bank vineyard of Chateau Trotanoy is situated not far from Petrus and Chateau Lafleur. Le Pin is just to the southeast and north of that you can find 3 other Ets. Moueix chateaux; Chateau Latour a’ Pomerol, Chateau Hosanna and Chateau La Fleur Petrus. So as you can see, they are quite well situated on the plateau of Pomerol.

1961-trotanoy

To produce the wine of Chateau Trotanoy, two laser sorting tables have been in use since the 2009 vintage. Vinification takes place in traditional, temperature-controlled, concrete vats ranging in size from 15 hectoliters to 146 hectoliters. The wine is aged in 40% to 50% new, French oak barrels for between 18 to 20 months before bottling.

The amount of oak and time in the barrel varies, depending on the quality, character, and style of the vintage. In vintages prior to the mid-1980s, a portion of the stems was often included in the fermentation vats. That is no longer the case today as the berries are completely destemmed.

The average annual production of Chateau Trotanoy is about 2,250 cases per year. There is a second wine, L’Esperance de Trotanoy, which made its debut with the 2009 vintage. About 500 cases of L’Esperance de Trotanoy are produced in an average vintage. However, L’Esperance de Trotanoy is not made every year. L’Esperance de Trotanoy comes from a specific parcel of vines that is not used in the Grand Vin, and declassified lots.

When to Drink Chateau Trotanoy, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau Trotanoy is much better with at least 12-15 years of aging in good vintages. Young vintages can be decanted for 2-3 hours or more. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume.

Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau Trotanoy offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 15-50 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau Trotanoy with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips

Chateau Trotanoy is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. Chateau Trotanoy is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes.

Chateau Trotanoy is also good when matched with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta.

Chocolate-covered plums, black cherries, flowers, espresso, spice, and licorice create the intense perfume. The palate offers an elegant, firm, classy profile, which is the perfect backdrop for all the ripe, dark, red pit fruits, cocoa, and salty chocolate. There is intensity. vibrancy, and a regal, structure with a long, complex finish here that really works. As I wrote in my barrel tastings, in some ways, this reminds me of the best attributes from previous classic vintages that are now aged into maturity. Drink from 2027-2060.

As good as this was from barrel, it is even better in the bottle! The array of black and dark red fruits, with nuances of flowers, chocolate, licorice, wet earth and spice in the perfume lets you know you are in for something special. This wine is what hedonism is all about. Sensuous, silky, polished, fresh and opulent, texturally, this is off the charts. The wine tastes and feels like the fruits were drenched in velvet, infused with dark chocolate and then polished, making this effortless to drink. The seamless finish hits the 60 second mark. Clearly, this is a legend in the making. If you are a fan of Trotanoy and you have the extra income, run, do not walk and grab some, as not much was made and it is only going to become more expensive from here. Drink from 2025-2060.

I'm not sure why bottled decadence is not enough of a descriptor. For those that either want me to work harder or who wish to gain further insight into this wine or both, let's begin with its inky color and the floral bouquet, which is something for the front window of the ritziest florist in town. The dark, red pit fruits offer intensity, purity and opulent textures not found in other wines. The depth in the finish is matched by the length. If you want to know what great Pomerol is all about, this wine is the prime example. Give it at least a decade or more before popping a cork. 98-100 Pts

There are many things I love about wine tasting. One of the great pleasures is tasting wine in barrel and scoring it higher in bottle, which is a true sign of quality. That is what took place here clearly. This wine is off the charts! The level of intensity has to be tasted to be believed. The fruit tastes as if each berry was polished with a velvet cloth. This is incredibly hedonistic. With a surreal texture, the wine unfolds and coats your palate with waves of perfectly ripe fruits. cashmere tannins make you with the 60 second finish was even longer! This is an indulgence of pleasure at its best.

Flowers, chocolate, licorice, plums and ripe, fresh, juicy, earthy black cherry notes are easy to find in the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is rich, deep, concentrated, silky and long. The powerful, intense, expansive finish grows, displaying a wide array of fruits and spice. The wine is structured with the ability to age for decades. I prefer the 2009 for its hedonistic, sensuous qualities, but this is a sublime vintage for Trotanoy, just different in style. I hope to compare both over the years.

Deep ruby in color, flowers, truffle, Asian spice and earthy scented. Opulent, rich, supple, and luxurious, the refined black and red fruit wine is very strong. This is heart-stopping wine. Hedonistic, opulent, sensuous, silky and flamboyant, the decadent, sexy character steals the show. And all the countless waves of dark chocolate, truffles, black cherry, mint, flowers, lilacs, violets and plums on the nose carry through in the 60-second finish. This is a candidate for perfection.

This is a future legendary Pomerol. Texturally, this sensuous, velvet drenched beauty is riveting. The layers of rich, pure, sweet, fresh, silky fruit seem endless as they build and expand on your palate. Still young, and with a long future ahead, this is already a stunning wine tasting experience. Hedonistic and impossible to put down, the finish must be tasted and felt to be believed. Give it another 5-7 years in the cellar and it could hit triple digits!

If you are seeeking one of wines most decadent experiences, this is where you go. I could spend all day describing the erotic, silky textures. Picture bottled sex and you get the idea. Just popped and poured, this was almost off the charts. Yes, it's still incredibly young and its best years are all in the future, but it's fun to check in and enjoy these wines in their youth allowing you to look back at what it was, and what it is. The wine is pricey. But if you can afford it, this is real deal for pleasure seekers. In the years to come, this could hit triple digits.

The pungent bouquet took almost no effort before grabbing your attention with its floral, earthy, truffle, black cherry liqueur, licorice and blue fruit aromas. Full bodied, concentrated and intense, the wine is pure hedonism in a glass. With its array of plum and cherry flavors, along with velvet textures, the majestic finish remained on your palate and expanded for close to 50 seconds. The mark of every great wine is the desire to taste it again, and again. I grabbed a second glass and put every drop where it belonged. If you have the money and want this style of wine, this is worth having in your cellar.

2009 Trotanoy sports a dark ruby color. Spice, jammy dark berries, black raspberries, truffles, plum liqueur, Valhrona chocolate, fresh flowers, and licorice in the nose. This wine is packed and stacked with endless layers of silky, velvet fruit. The textures offer incredible sensations of opulence, richness, and cashmere. The wine coats your palate with endless layers of intense, decadent fruit, chocolate, and spice. The seamless finish lasts more than sixty seconds. The wine should be forced to carry a warning label: “Open when in need of extreme hedonistic pleasure.” This remarkable Trotanoy offers a more complete tasting experience than either the sublime 1998 or the off the charts 2008. As good as those vintages are, they don’t make the strong statement the 2009 does. 98-100 Pts

Medium-bodied, plummy, round and floral with intriguing notes of mint, herbs, thyme, truffle and wild cherries. The nose is more complex than the palate, which offers earthy plums and herbs with a breath of cocoa in the short finish. This is quite good for the vintage, but it is only a moderately good vintage for Trotanoy.

Tannic, concentrated, full bodied, rich and quite young, it takes effort and coaxing to bring out the dark chocolate covered fruit, floral and earthy characteristics. Once past its initial tannic opening, the fruit shows it fresh, pure, clean side. But this vintage demands time in the bottle, at least another 6-8 years.

Chocoalte, red and black plums, spice box and floral notes lead to a tight, tannic, fresh, Pomerol that is not a lot of fun to drink today. Silky tannins and a refined personality, along with a good concentration of ripe, sweet fruit leads me to believe, this vintage of Trotanoy demands 6-10 years before it really opens up and comes together.

Chocolate dusted flowers, truffle, stone and sweet cherries create the perfume. While the wine is soft and silky, it lacks the concentration found in the better vintages of Trotanoy or other Pomerol producers in 2001. The elegant wine ends with sweet, ripe, pure cherries with cocoa. The wine improved in the glass a bit, but there is not much to be gained by further aging.

2001 Trotanoy starts off with chocolate fudge, truffle, earth, blackberry, cassis and floral aromas. Full bodied, but lacking the lushness usually associated with Pomerol, the wine ends with chocolate, black cherry and a greenness from under ripe fruit. Not a bad wine, but missing the excitement and opulence I want in Trotanoy. This is overpriced for the quality.

Violets, truffle, spicy plum and dark chocolate get the party going. The luscious, full bodied palate, with its silky tannins and spicy, ripe, dark red fruits is however, the star of the show. One hour of decanting opened this up quite nicely. At 18, this is starting to show its stuff. It should be close to peak with 3-5 more years of aging, where it will deliver the goods for at least another 20 more years.

This is getting close to mature. It only took 26 years. But it was worth the wait. The wine is regal, plush, opulent, and intense with layers of perfectly ripe, powerful, strong black and red fruits, truffles the size of footballs, a bowl of Valrhona chocolate, and an orchard of ripe berries. The wine is palate-staining with its non-stop intensity. This is a muscular Pomerol with a refined edge that offers a thrilling tasting experience. In another decade, this could be a triple-digit wine. My instincts say it is highly possible. Drink from 2024-2050.

Better on the nose, with its truffle, earth, plum, tobacco leaf, and plum nose, than on the palate, which expresses the austere side of the vintage. The wine tries to soften and fill out, but it holds on to its tannic spine, dusty tannins, and firm, old-school, classic edge. It will be long-lived, but it is not a hedonistic Pomerol. Drink from 2023-2045.

This has developed quite nicely over the years. Fully-mature, soft, silky, fresh and plummy, the finish, with its truffle, cherry, plum, herb, cocoa, and spice nuances hits the spot.

Still young, this keep getting better and better. The truffle, dark chocolate covered black raspberries and black cherry notes in the perfume and made even better with hints of floral notes. Full bodied, silky and concentrated, this is still young, fresh and vibrant and will even get better with age.

It's all about the bottle, once a wine hits 10-15 years of age. At close to 25, provenance is even more important. I've tasted better, younger, fresher examples, this bottle was much better on the nose, with its truffle, chocolate, black cherry profile. It fell short on the palate, as it lacked the richness and depth this wine normally showed. This note is for this bottle, other bottles with good storage have been dramatically better.

Sporting a mature color, making it look much older than it should, a complex bouquet stuffed with chocolate, truffle, black cherry, plums, earth, earth, forest floor and spice aromas lead to a sensuous, lush, polished, sexy array of plum, chocolate and truffle. What a pleasure. This is probably drinking at peak. I'm sorry I finished most of the case before it started to deliver the goods. However, due to its advanced color, I would not hesitate to pop a cork as this is probably not going to make it to old age.

Chocolate, flowers, plums, spice, truffle and blackberry aromas open to a lush, polished wine with satin textures and a long, soft, cocoa and black cherry finish. This is close to mature. While it could improve over the next decade or even longer, it's drinking at the perfect place today.

This is a very pretty wine. It's more complicated on its floral, they, truffle, tobacco, and plum nose, than on the medium bodied, elegantly styled palate. The wine just lacks the weight and density found in the best vintages.

One of the few disappointing, older vintages of Trotanoy I've ever tasted. Medium bodied, in fact, almost light, the wine is past its drink through date, focusing on the earthy, tobacco, mushroom and wet, forest characteristics, than on the remaining vestiges of red plums. Drink up if have any.

Bottled decadence. This is so sexy, sensuous, and rich, it is almost off the charts! From the first whiff, the flowers, cherries, cocoa, truffle, and plums lets you know you're not in Kansas anymore. But it is on the palate that the wine really takes off, due to its wall of opulently-textured, velvety dark red fruits. Drink 2022-2035.

Drinking at its full peak of maturity, this is an incredible tasting experience. Texturally, it is all silky and velvet, with its layers of dark chocolate-covered plums, dark cherries, truffle, smoke, wet earth and spice, that is only made better by the 50-second finish, this is bottled hedonism at its best. If you are lucky enough to have a bottle or two in your cellar, this is perfect today. Do not decant, except to remove any sediment. Just pop, pour and enjoy the ride...

Definitely, at peak maturity, this is all about the truffles on the nose. At least initially. From there, a background note of citrus appears, along with, plums, cherries and chocolate mint. Lush, soft, polished, velvet-textured, concentrated, ripe, sweet, earthy fruits with hints of chocolate cascade over your palate. This is just a beauty in every sense of the word. It's always a shame when older bottles do not perform as they should. But that's the risk you run with older wines more than 20 years of age. Sadly, this bottle seemed far too advanced for its age, with more lightness to the color, dusty plums, cocoa and raspberry notes in the aromatics and finish that ended far too quickly. I've had much better bottles. Good storage and provenance counts.

Wow, what a beautiful wine! A ruby red color with more lightening at the rim than the other 82’s. Cherries, raspberries, ripe plums with a hint of mocha and mushrooms on the nose. The texture was akin to liquid silk with velvet. The finish was so sensuous it was difficult to put the glass down. This wine is hedonistic. It is fully mature and while it might improve a bit, I’d drink it over the next 10-15 years. This wine personifies elegance.

Some wines offer intense perfume. Others are more about the palate feel. Only the best wines combine both. Complex aromatics of plum, truffle, tobacco, bitter chocolate, five spice, earth and forest floor scents pop as soon as the bottle is opened. In the mouth, elegant, lush, round, opulent layers of velvet drenched fruit are felt on your palate. The long plum, dark cherry, spice and coca sensations combined with the silky textures satisfy cravings for decadence. Not as refined or rich as 71 Petrus, this is not far off the mark. Fully mature, well stored bottles will continue offering a great tasting experience for several more years.

What a sublime wine. Intoxicating, chocolate, plum fragrances that were made better by a rich, thick, dense palate of sexy, velvet drenched fruit. It's opulent, fragrant and continued improving in the glass during the entire evening. Great juice! The only two negatives are one, recognizing how much patience I need for my 98's to come around and two, that I do not have enough of this sublime nectar in my cellar.

This was my first time with this vintage, so I am not certain if this bottle was representative, Fading, with some ripe, sweet and tart fruits, there was a stern character to the tannins and textures. The nose was majestic, but this classicly styled wine seems to have had better days. I have another bottle in my cellar, so perhaps it will be better.

The best bottle of this I am ever going to taste was off the charts from the moment it hit the glass, An incredible array of earthy scents with dark chocolate, truffle, cigar box, fig, leafy herbs, dried cherries, dried red plums, and old flowers resonated in the nose. The palate was even better with its concentration, salty rocks, dried berries, cherries, cocoa powder, and plums. Intense, palate-filling, long, silky, lush, and complex, the finish continued long after the wine went where it was intended to go. Provenace was the name of the game here. Drink from 2024-2035.

My second time with this legendary wine, and while both bottles have been good, they have never been great. This bottle was served double blind against 70, 82 & 98 Trotanoy, and all those other bottles bested this. The wine was quite good, but it did not deliver the magic in the glass I was expecting. Clearly, the wine has the depth, concentration of raw materials, and aromatic complexities of a very good, Bordeaux, but it lacks the nuances and attention seeking complexities, coupled with the length and decadence that a great 1961 Pomerol should deliver. Perhaps, at close to 60 years of age, this is simply, tired?

Clearly, the wine has the depth, concentration of raw materials, and aromatic complexities of a very good, Bordeaux, but it lacks the nuances and attention seeking complexities, coupled with the length and decadence that a great 1961 Pomerol should deliver. Perhaps, at close to 60 years of age, this is simply, tired?

1961 Trotanoy is one of those wines I never thought I would taste. It's incredibly rare. The few people I know who've tasted it, speak about it in hushed tones with reverence and knowing smiles. If a bottle comes up for sale, I'm sure it will end up at Bill Gates house. When a friend of mine brought it to dinner, I was thrilled at meeting this legendary Bordeaux wine. This bottle was only traded once, from the original owner to my friend, back in 1982. This was as good as it was going to get. Would it deliver? We popped the cork to find out. An exotic perfume filled with cloves, roses, chocolate, Asian spice, fudge, truffle, blackberry liqueur, earth and tobacco caught my attention and kept it. We were off to a good start. After spending ample time with the perfume, it was time for the big show. How would this wine taste and feel as it slid past my lips, spilling over my palate? Lacking the concentration found in the best wines, this elegant, sweet, round, plummy wine was filled with charm. But the wine did not deliver what we had hoped for. What is not ravaged by the hands of time? Make no mistake, this was a good wine. But this bottle did not express the otherworldly qualities we had hope for. Once again, there is no such thing as a great older wine, only great older bottles.

Good, but not compelling. With 10 minutes in the glass, the wine filled out a but, softened and picked up more silkiness, but more concentration and depth was needed here. Still, tasting a legendary bottle from Trotanoy was more than a treat for this Pomerol lover.

This show stopper of a wine was a treat. Ruby tea in color, the wine was loaded with smoke, cherry pipe tobacco, red plums, truffles and tobacco leaf. Long, earthy, silky and plummy, this is at full maturity.
