Chateau Hosanna History, Overview

Chateau Hosanna does not have a long history in the Pomerol appellation. Until quite recently, the vineyard was used to produce wines previously sold under the name of Chateau Certan Giraud.

In the estate’s formative years, the vines were part of the vast de May estate which gave birth to Vieux Chateau Certan, Certan de May, and the aforementioned Chateau Certan Giraud and other properties.

During the early to mid 20th century, the estate was known as Chateau Certan Talazac. By 1950, the vineyard was selling its wine using the name of Chateau Certan Marzelle.

Jumping ahead to the modern era, following the frost of 1956, the estate became the property of the Giraud family who renamed the winery, Chateau Giraud. The Giraud family later sold the vineyards in two separate transactions in 1999. They sold their best parcels to Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix.

The remaining 4 hectares of vines were purchased by Jean Hubert Delon, better known as the owner of Chateau Leoville Las Cases. Those vines were used to increase the size of Chateau Nenin, which is owned by Jean Hubert Delon and his sister.

When the sale first took place in 1999, Christian Moueix planned on selling the wine using the name Chateau Certan. While Alexandre Thienpont of Vieux Chateau Certan had no problem with a new Pomerol wine being sold as Chateau Certan, due to objections from the owner of Certan de May, who felt that name was too similar to their estate, Christian Moueix chose the name Hosanna for his new winery.

One of the first moves made by Christian Moueix after taking control of the vineyard was to improve the drainage. They also added deep wells to the property, which further helped remove excess water. His next step was to replant much of the vineyard that was previously used to produce Certan Marzelle.

Two wines were originally produced from the vineyard. Chateau Hosanna was produced from the best fruit and oldest vines found in the vineyard. The remaining fruit was bottled and sold as Certan Marzelle. Certan Marzelle is no longer in production.

The terroir is situated in the heart of the Pomerol plateau. The vineyard has old vines which are planted on clay and gravel soils not that much different than its neighbors, Petrus, Chateau Lafleur, Vieux Chateau Certan, and Chateau Certan de May. Their oldest parcels were planted in 1956, 1957, and 1978.

Hosanna is one of the top, new Pomerol properties to watch. This exciting, new, Right Bank winery announced its intention to produce stellar wines starting with a pair of back-to-back hits, 2000 and 2001! They have not looked back since. 

The wines of Hosanna are rich, complex, full-bodied, and concentrated. They display the elegance and charm Pomerol is known for. In 2008 and 2009, Hosanna produced some of the most compelling Bordeaux wines of the vintage.

In an interesting move that clearly shows the level of quality the estate wants to produce, the entire crop of 2013 Hosanna was declassified due to problems with the Merlot.

The best vintages of Chateau Hosanna are: 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2001 and 2000.

Chateau Hosanna Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking

The 4.45 hectare Pomerol vineyard of Hosanna is planted to 70% Merlot, much of which was planted during the 1950s and 30% Cabernet Franc, with vines dating back to the 1970s. Many of the Cabernet Franc vines are old at close to 40 years of age.

The terroir is gravel with red clay soils. The vineyard is on the top of the famous Pomerol plateau. The property is located close to Vieux Chateau Certan and Certan de May and not far from Petrus on the famous Pomerol plateau.

For the production of Hosanna, two laser sorting tables have been in use since 2009. Chateau Hosanna uses thermoregulated concrete vats and since 2004, they have added a few stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks. The press wine obtained from vertical basket presses is added, or not during the élevage, depending on the vintage.

The wine of Hosanna is aged in close to 50% new, French oak barrels for between 12 to 14 months. The aging can be slightly longer, depending on the character and quality of the vintage. The wine is racked 3-4 times per year.

The wines of Chateau Hosanna are vinified at another Pomerol estate owned by Ets Moueix Chateau La Fleur Petrus.

Not much wine is made at this small Pomerol estate, in fact, the average annual production of Hosanna is close to 1,500 cases per year.

When to Drink Chateau Hosanna, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau Hosanna is much better with at least 8-12 years of aging in good vintages when it is ready to be enjoyed. Young vintages can be decanted for 2-3 hours or more.

This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau Hosanna offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 10-30 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau Hosanna with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips

Chateau Hosanna is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift.

Chateau Hosanna is best served with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted braised, and grilled dishes. Chateau Hosanna is also good with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta.
