16 of us sat down at 9.30 am last Friday to blind taste our way through the 100 top 2003 wines of the Medoc and Graves. Tasters included Jancis Robinson, James Suckling, Neal Martin, Barry Phillips and Derek Smedley.
The large gravel found throughout the estate’s topsoil absorb the sun’s heat during the day and release it at night. This improves the maturity of the grape giving much of the special character to this Bordeaux wine.
The 15.92-hectare vineyard on the limestone plateau of Saint Emilion is planted to 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon produces a full-bodied, rich wine with ample chocolate, blackberry, black raspberry, stone, licorice and truffle flavors.
Due to the use of advanced, satellite photography, an intra-plot analysis of the vineyard is possible, allowing the estate to harvest when the grapes are at full maturity.
2010 Chateauneuf du Pape offers a lot of ripe, rich, concentrated, lush, powerful, alcoholic, balanced wines that will drink well young, yet age and develop for 10, 15 or in the best cases, 20 years or more!
2011 St. Emilion at its best, hits all the right high notes with ripe fruit, minerality and lush textures. On the other hand, there are too wines suffering from over extraction and either too much oak, or not enough fruit, depending on your viewpoint.
