Savvy consumers seeking values from Right Bank, Merlot-based should become familiar with the Saint Emilion Satellite appellations. 2021 Lussac, 2021 Montagne, 2021 Puisseguin, and 2021 St. Georges all offer some very nice wines, but you do need to be choosy with 2021.
2021 Bordeaux Superieur wines can offer some of the best values in the entire Bordeaux appellation. Even though the year was more than difficult for growers, especially with a preponderance of Merlot, and low yields, there are some fine wines worth looking at.
2021 Cotes de Bordeaux endured a difficult growing season with devastating frosts, downy mildew attacks, and rainy weather until the vintage was saved by the Indian Summer. Production was down, but the wines from these appellations ended up quite good, stylish and well-priced.
2021 Lalande de Pomerol had a similar growing season to its much more famous neighboring appellation, Pomerol, but the devastation from the frosts was much worse. Even with all of the year’s difficulties and challenges, there are some nice, early-drinking wines offering good style and character.
Pomerol produced a myriad of fabulous wines in 2021. Not in the opulent, flashy style of the 3 decent, preceding vintages, but in a classic mode, with lower alcohol levels, freshness, vibrancy, purity, and elegance.
