Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus History, Overview
Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is the idea of Hubert de Bouard, the owner of Chateau Angelus and Chateau Bellevue in St. Emilion. Hubert de Bouard purchased the vineyard from an insurance company in 1998. This is a relative new wine, as the first year for the wine was produced with the 2000 vintage.
Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is produced from a specific a two hectare parcel of old vines that are close to 45 years of age, situated on the Lalande de Pomerol plateau.
Today, Chateau La Fleur de Bouard is completely managed by the young, attractive and dynamic Coralie de Bouard, the eldest daughter of Hubert de Bouard.
Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking
The 2 hectare vineyard for Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is planted to 100% old vine Merlot. The vineyard has a terroir that is similar to what you find in Pomerol with its gravel and clay soils.
The vineyard is planted to a vine density that ranges from 6,500 vines per hectare in the parcels with the oldest vines. You find the density increases to 8,500 vines per hectare in the more recent plantings. The average age of the vines used to produce La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus are on average, close to 45 years of age.
In 2011, La Fleur de Bouard completed a multi-year, top to bottom reconstruction of their entire wine making making facilities and the chateau, making this one of the most modern estates in the Right Bank. The most striking new feature is their hanging, reverse, conical, gleaming, stainless steel vats.
In the vineyards of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus, yields are kept low. To give you an idea of how low the yields are, for the 2009 vintage, the yields of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus were only 20 hectoliters per hectare.
To produce the wine of La Fleur de Bourd Le Plus, the juice sees a five day cold soak at 10 degrees Celsius and a four-week maceration in “OVNI” stainless steel tanks. The wine is vinified in a combination of stainless steel vats and short, squat shaped oak barrels. The wine receives regular pigeages.
Malolactic fermentation takes place in 100% new, French oak barrels from four different coopers, Taransaud (40%), Demptos (40%), Darnajou (15%) and Vicard (5%). Aging sur lies takes place in 100% new, French oak barrels for an estimated 33 months prior to bottling. The wine requires collaring time for the oak to fully integrate into the wine, and for the secondary notes to develop.
The best vintages of Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus are: 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2001 and 2000.
When to Drink Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time
Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is much better with at least 6-9 years of aging in good vintages. Young vintages can be decanted for 1 – 2 hours.
This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 7-20 years of age after the vintage.
Serving Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips
Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift.
Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised and grilled dishes.
Chateau La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is also good when matched with Asian dishes, rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms and pasta.
The blend of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is usually close to 100% Merlot. Hubert de Bouard likes to push the envelop with La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus in terms of quality for the region, and with his desire to produce wine from fully ripened fruit. In 2009, not only did the fruit, skins and seeds fully ripen, so did the stems.
In fact, one barrel was fermented using whole clusters, meaning that a portion of the grapes were fermented with the stems intact. Not much of this special Right Bank wine is made.
Along the very expensive method of producing the wine, the fact that only 300 to 400 cases of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus are produced each year, makes this an expensive wine for the Lalande de Pomerol appellation. However, on a quality level, it competes with and is better than many Pomerol wines. Based on a recent tasting of the 2000, it ages quite well too.
In 2016, Coralie de Bouard started another winery in the Montagne St. Emilion appellation, Clos de Bouard.

Showing maturity of color that's proportionate for its age, the wine is all about is fresh, ripe fruits, menthol, cigar box and forest floor character. Silky, soft and forward, with a sweet, fresh, concentrated, black plum and dark cherry character, there is good purity of fruit and sweetness with a second wave of dark chocolate that pops up in the finish. 1,779 Views Tasted May 25, 2016A bit on the masculine side of the style range for Lalande de Pomerol. Te show bouqet pops with coconut, floral, blackberry, chocolate and spicy plum notes. Tannic, with round, ripe plums and mocha underneath, give this a few more years to develop. 2,028 Views Tasted Feb 5, 2014 |

Fully mature, my last bottle of this charmer was the best of the bunch. A dead ringer for a Pomerol, with its soft, voluptuous textures, the wine displays its truffle, mocha, dark chocolate and plums with ease. This is not a wine to hold for further development, as it's already at peak today. 4,113 Views Tasted Dec 19, 2017 |
