Chateau La Conseillante History, Overview
Chateau La Conseillante is one of the older Pomerol properties in the entire appellation. It has a history that dates all way back to the middle of the 18th century. At the time of the estate’s creation, Madame Catherine Conseillan was in charge of managing the property. It was from the Conseillan family that the property found its name.
Wines were already being produced and marketed by what we now know of as La Conseillante by 1756, making the property one of the first estates in Pomerol. On the passing of Madame Conseillan, the estate passed to the Despoujal family. The Nicolas family bought Chateau La Conseillante in 1871 from the Leperche family.
The Nicolas family were well established in Bordeaux as they already owned a thriving Bordeaux l negociant company, Nicolas Freres. The company was located in Libourne, which is only a stone’s throw from Pomerol.
The Nicolas family has remained the owners of Chateau La Conseillante through today. Since 1970, Chateau La Conseillante has been managed by two different branches of the family owners. Today Jean Valmy Nicolas, Bertrand Nicolas, and Marie France are on top of things at La Conseillante.
Together, they are the 4th and 5th generations of the Nicolas family to run Chateau La Conseillante. Currently, many of the day-to-day responsibilities for Chateau La Conseillante are handled by Jean Valmy Nicolas.
Chateau La Conseillante is a stunning-looking Bordeaux wine bottle. Due to its unique, trademark, bright purple-colored capsule, a bottle of Chateau La Conseillante is easy to see in a cellar. The purple color was chosen to represent the vibrant hue of the wine and to highlight the unique, often present aromas of violets in the perfume.
The wine label of the Nicolas family pictures a shield along with a silver border that surrounding the letter “N”. The original design for the label of Chateau La Conseillante was created in 1871, the same year the family purchased the estate.
In 1971, Chateau La Conseillante was completely renovated and modernized with the addition of temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks. There were among the first of their kind in the Pomerol appellation. Until the 2000 vintage, the family members who owned Chateau La Conseillante were responsible for the vineyards and the wine-making.
This changed the following year with the 2001 vintage when the estate hired the young, hard-working and talented, Jean-Michel Laporte. One of the first major changes that took place at that time was to lower their yields, which clearly helped with the consistency and with the level of quality in their wines.
Jean Michel Laporte was placed in charge of Chateau La Conseillante in 2003. Michel Rolland was brought in as their consultant in 2013. Jean-Michel Laporte departed La Conseillante in 2015 and was replaced by Marielle Cazaux, the former director of neighboring Chateau Petit Village.
Chateau La Conseillante Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking
The vineyard of La Conseillante is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Over time Chateau La Conseillante plans to increase the percentage of Cabernet Franc in their vineyards with the objective of having between 25% and 30% Cabernet Franc planted. In 2023, La Conseillante planted a small, .5 hectare parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon that could be used as soon as 2025.
While the estate previously had a percentage of Malbec in the vineyards, those vines have since been removed. It is interesting to note that prior to the frost of 1956, 7% of the vineyard was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, at La Conseillante, they are slowly continuing to increase the percentage of their vines farmed using organic techniques.
The 12.3 hectare Pomerol vineyard of Chateau La Conseillante remained essentially unchanged since the early 1700s until they added a .3 hectare parcel in the La Gravette vineyard in 2014. Located on the eastern tip of the Pomerol plateau, Chateau La Conseillante is only a stone’s throw from Chateau LEvangile and a vine from Petrus, not far from Chateau Cheval Blanc and close to Chateau Petit Village.
The Right Bank vineyard is basically in one single block of vines, which is unusual for Pomerol. The vineyard is divided into 18 separate parcels that single block with a shape that looks a little bit like a windy snake or the letter S. Interestingly, close to 30% of Chateau La Conseillante is located in St. Emilion, close to the gravel and sandy terroir of Chateau Cheval Blanc. Much of their Cabernet Franc is planted here.
The terroir is gray clay and red clay with deposits of iron, gravel, and sand in their soil. They also have large deposits of blue clay in their terroir as well. Depending on where you are in the vineyards of La Conseillante, you will encounter soils with a deeper concentration of clay, or terroir with more gravel and some sand.
Most of their Cabernet Franc is planted in the gravel and sand soils, while the Merlot is planted in the clay dominated soil. On average, the vines are 35 years of age. But La Conseillante has old vines, some of which date back to the year after the devastating frost in 1957.
The vineyard is planted to a vine density of close to 7,000 vines per hectare with the gloa of increasing the density to 7,500 vines per hectare. The young vines are now planted at the higher densities of 7,500 vines per hectare. This is up from the previous level of 6,000 vines per hectare.
Chateau La Conseillante completed a massive renovation to their entire wine-making facilities just in time for the 2012 vintage. In their unique, circular-shaped, winery, they added 22 new, aerial, concrete tanks and an additional underground, concrete vat. They retained three, small, open, stainless steel tanks
This allows for true precision vinification on a parcel by parcel basis for the estate’s 18 parcels. 18 of the vats will be used for vinification. 4 vats are used only for blending and holding the wine. In addition, there is a new grape reception center which includes multiple sorting tables and de-stalking machines.
At La Conseillante, with the new cellars and stainless steel vats, they now vinify on a parcel by parcel basis, which allows for much more precision. In fact, Chateau La Conseillante was the first producer in Pomerol and St. Emilion to install stainless steel, temperature-controlled vats. The press wine is aged separately.
Malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks. The wine at Chateau La Conseillante was aged in 80% to 100% new, French oak for about 18 months until the legendary 2009 vintage.
Starting with the 2010 vintage, the amount of new oak was reduced to an average of 70% to 85% new, French oak, depending on the vintage. The estate recently added a second wine starting with the 2007 vintage, Duo de Conseillante.
In 2015, Chateau La Conseillante began micro-vinifying 6% of their wine in barrel. 2015 marked another change at the estate. The label was changed for the first time in decades. The change is slight, but it’s another step in modernizing the chateau.
In 2016, the portion of wine vinified entirely in barrels was increased to 9%. Coupled with the other recent changes, the textural component has really improved here. Beginning in 2020, 4% of the young vine Merlot are aging in Amphora. It is interesting to note that La Conseillante is one of the few Right Bank chateau to blend early, shortly after malolactic fermentation has been completed, and well before bottling.
The average annual production of Chateau La Conseillante is close to 4,500 cases of wine per year.

Chateau La Conseillante Character and Style of the Wine
Chateau La Conseillante produces a wine of elegance, silky tannins, and velvety-textured fruit. It is never the most powerful Pomerol, nor the ripest. But perhaps it’s one of the most harmonious and refined wines in Pomerol. Black raspberry, plum dark cherry, chocolate, and flowers are usually found in the perfume that pairs with the elegant, sensuous, refined, fresh, style of their wine.
When to Drink Chateau La Conseillante, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time
Chateau La Conseillante is much better with at least 8-12 years of aging in good vintages. Young vintages can be decanted for 2-3 hours or more. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume.
Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau La Conseillante offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 10-35 years of age after the vintage.
Serving Chateau La Conseillante with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips

Chateau La Conseillante is also good with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, salmon, mushrooms, and pasta.

The showy display of violets, and lilacs that get the wine going is made even better by the accompanying notes of truffle, chocolate, black cherry liqueur, licorice, and plums. However, as good as this is aromatic, the silky, fresh, sensuous textures, and the level of purity found in the multiple layers of perfectly ripe, elegant fruits are what provide all the right stuff. The seamless finish, with its energy, concentration, and refinement seal the deal. Bottled sexiness, this is so good, I could not put the glass down without refilling it. The only reason this didn't yet garner 100 Pts is the perfect 2016 is just a tiny bit better, for now. Don't be surprised to see this hit 100 Pts as it ages for a bit. Racked two weeks ago, the wine was tight aromatically. Quite fragrant with its showy bouquet of violets, roses, chocolate, black cherries, and plums. Truffle infused red fruits with green leaf, plums and mint. The wine is a bit strict on the palate. The attack is soft and fruity, but there is some austerity in the finish, once the dark, red fruits have started to fade. Still holding on to its last gasp of youth here, this might be a slightly more masculine Pomerol. The soaring aromatics are in play here. This is at its apogee, so decanting is not needed, except to move the wine off its sediment. Pop, pour, and enjoy. 4,121 Views Tasted Nov 29, 2020It is hard to say why some bottles from the same case are so much better than their brothers or sisters. But it does happen. This example is the best 89 I've tasted in years. Not decanted, the nose shot out its roses, truffle, smoke, licorice, cocoa and ripe plums once the cork left the bottle. Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, fresh, sexy and impossible to stop drinking, this is what mature Pomerol is all about! Shared with a bestie for life, the memory will linger. 4,729 Views Tasted Dec 18, 2019I am thinking this previously, decadent, sexy beast is on the other side of its prime time window. The color is lighter, the fruit has lost weight, the length and opulence is not as pronounced as it was in its prime. This is still a very good wine. It is sexy, silky and loaded with truffled plums and cocoa, but it is not the majestic experience it once was. Sort of like what happens to older wine lovers, we are good, just not quite at our peak any longer. If you are sitting on bottles, you need to start popping them over the next few years. 4,537 Views Tasted Mar 9, 2019Perhaps this is starting to fade just a bit from its peak. But who cares? If you have a bottle what are you waiting for? 5,370 Views Tasted May 9, 2014My first Bordeaux of the new year! Over the past few years, the wine has exchanged its fruits for an earthier, tobacco, truffle, black plum and fennel character. Elegant, soft, refined, medium bodied and silky, there is a good sensation of freshness in the spicy, black raspberry filled finish. Light ruby in color, the wine is fully mature. While it does not require drinking in the near future, there is no reason to hold this any longer. This was only splash decanted. I do not think extended air is in the best interests in this delicate wine. 6,087 Views Tasted Jan 4, 20141989 Chateau La Conseillante was the first Bordeaux wine I purchased by the case. I remember those early days in the mid 1990’s, when the wine was stacked from the floor to ceiling and was priced at a whopping $40 per bottle! While this is close to fully mature, the wine still delivers lush, opulent, sensuous textures, licorice, plum, chocolate and plum fragrances and a finish that offers a beautiful sense of purity, freshness and velvet. There is no hurry to drink it, but I doubt it’s going to improve. 5,921 Views Tasted Oct 28, 2013Floral, bitter chocolate, licorice and black raspberry aromas made up the perfume. It's been great since the day it was bottled. Flowers, licorice, blackberry, cherry and truffle aromas lead to a pure, silk and velvet wine. Elegant and sensuous, the wine ends with polished, sweet, plush, fresh, ripe dark berries and chocolate. 6,647 Views Tasted Feb 22, 2012With scents that remind me of a flower shop that caught on fire and was engulfed in smoke, add truffles, black raspberry, chocolate, caramel, licorice and wet earth aromatics to make up the perfume. What the wine lacks in power, it makes up for it with opulent, silky, refined textures that finish with chocolate coated, black raspberry and dark cherry. This bottle offered a better tasting experience than the previous bottle from the same case. That being said, this is fully mature and is probably best enjoyed over the next 3-10 years. 7,142 Views Tasted Jan 15, 2012Sting might have sang about a message in a bottle, but this wine was all about sex in a bottle. Filled with elegant, liquid silk and polished velvet textures, coupled with beguiling aromas of violets, chocolate, truffle, black cherry, tobacco, molasses and brown sugar, this decadent charmer hits all the right notes. The wine finishes with chocolate covered blackberries and spicy plums. The only thing sexier than this wine was the special woman sharing it with me. This is close to full maturity. There is no reason to hold it any longer. While it might gain in aromatics, the sensuous textures could subside. 9,339 Views Tasted Mar 11, 201189 La Conseillante at its best can simply be described as bottled hedonism. Fortunately for us, this bottle was at its best! Truffles, spice, fresh flowers, dark berries, coca powder, Asian spices, black cherry and a hint of bitter chocolate made up the perfume. From a magnum, this was a thrill-a-sip wine. Silky, vibrant, earthy, floral, and packed with truffle, cigar wrapper, bitter-dark chocolate, and red plums, every sniff, swirl, and sip were gorgeous. Fully mature, if you are lucky enough to own a bottle, there is no reason to hesitate before opening it. Clearly at maturity, the nose, with its blend of truffles, flowers, smoke, plums, cherry and bitter chocolate was enthralling. Medium-full bodied, with an elegant, refined character, silky, soft tanins and fresh, sweet plums with a touch of cocoa felt great and tasted even better. What a surprise to find a war year bottle that was rocking'! At 101 years of age, this still had gas in the tank.
