2022 Dry White Bordeaux Wine Report…

Every vintage tells a story. There are vintages which favor red wines. There are years that are better for white Bordeaux wine and there are vintages when both, red Bordeaux and white Bordeaux hit all the right notes.

2022 Bordeaux is clearly a year for red wines. Of course, there are dry white Bordeaux wines I like. They are mostly early-drinking, ripe, opulent, and aromatic wines with beautiful notes of flowers, yellow and orange citrus and white peaches.

But the issue going forward is that even though I enjoyed a lot of 2022 white Bordeaux wines, several of those wines are missing the necessary levels of acidity to allow for long-term aging for most of the wines.

Especially those coming from the traditional areas for white wines, like Pessac Leognan and Graves. Interestingly, the 2022 Bordeaux white wines from the Medoc and some of the other AOC Bordeaux Blancs will offer a lot of high-quality drinking. The trick this year was the magic of terroir. Clay and limestone soils with the ability to retain moisture during the hot summer months were able to produce grapes with strong aromatics, creamy-textured fruits and freshness.

The biggest issue with 2022 white Bordeaux wines was the high temperatures and lack of water. Historically, Bordeaux has always been just a bit too cool for red wine grapes and slightly too warm for the white wine grapes. But, with climate change, some vintages are going to be a bit too warm for some terroirs to produce the style of white wine, with its trademark freshness and crisp acidities Bordeaux is famous for.

One interesting thing to keep paying attention to for White Bordeaux wine lovers is the continuing increase of new plantings of non-traditional white wine grapes in almost every appellation in Bordeaux. Growers are planting Chardonnay and other grape varieties not currently allowed in Bordeaux. Frankly, they should be allowed as many of these wines offer complexities and freshness, especially with climate change. Today you find more growers in Margaux, St. Emilion, Pauillac and even Pomerol making delicious white wines! Duhart Milon in Pauillac has a new wine and within a year or two, you will be able to taste white Bordeaux from Pichon Lalande, d’Issan and others! And the march to high-levels of quality for dry white wines from Sauternes and Barsac continues as well.

The 2022 Bordeaux white grape harvest was early, starting close to August 9 for the Sauvignon Blanc in Sauternes. Most of the harvesting of the 2022 white Bordeaux grapes was completed before the end of August, with a few vineyards finishing in early September making this the earliest harvest in modern history for the white wine grapes in Bordeaux.
