The satellite appellations of St. Emilion offer some of the best values found in the 2019 vintage. Located adjacent, or not too far from Saint Emilion, many of the following 2019 Bordeaux right Bank wines come from vineyards with terroirs that are similar to some of the top vineyards in its famous and more expensive neighbor.
With the 2019 vintage, all of 4 of the satellite appellations, Lussac St. Emilion, Montagne St. Emilion, Puisseguin St. Emilion and St. Georges St. Emilion produced very good, stylish and well-priced, Merlot dominant wines that will drink well early, and sell for very friendly consumer prices.
In a normal year, I would have the opportunity to taste so many different wines from the satellite appellations. But as I was able to receive and taste the wines at home, it allowed me to taste many of these well-priced gems for the first time.
All of the following 2019 St. Emilion satellite appellation wines were tasted in my home office from mid-May until mid-June in non-blind conditions. They are arranged alphabetically by appellation.
2019 Courlat Cuvée Jean Baptiste – Lussac-St. Émilion – Floral, with ample, sweet, ripe, red and black fruits, soft, silky textures and freshness in the red fruity finish. 89-91 Pts
2019 La Grande Clotte – Lussac-St. Émilion – Medium-bodied, soft, forward and fruity, this is great for early drinking pleasure. 87-89 Pts
2019 La Grande Clotte L’Envolée – Lussac-St. Émilion – Licorice, flowers, dark cherries and cocoa from start to finish in this round, soft, easy to like charmer. 88-90 Pts
2019 La Rose Perrière – Lussac-St. Émilion – Medium-bodied, bright, fresh and peppery with sharp red fruits and spice on the mid-palate and in the finish. This will be best in its fruity youth. 86-88 Pts
2019 Soleil Le Rival – Lussac-St. Émilion – A big gulp of ripe, juicy plums, blackberry, espresso and licorice on the nose and palate. Full, rich and concentrated, the wine is lush, round and forward, with a long fruity tail in the finish. 89-91 Pts
2019 Tour Perruchon – Lussac-St. Émilion – Round, supple and packed with luscious dark red fruits, soft, polished tannins, chocolate and a touch of herbs in the finish. The bottle shape will garner extra attention with its antique shape. 89-91 Pts
2019 Tour Perruchon – Lussac-St. Émilion – Medium-bodied, early-drinking, fruit-filled charmer with soft, alluring textures and sweet black cherries along with a judicious hit of licorice and blueberry in the finish. 88-90 Pts
2019 Barbe Blanche – Lussac-St. Émilion – Soft, round, fruity, forward and approachable, the medium-bodied wine is an easy drinking charmer that will be perfect for early, uncomplicated consumption. 85-87 Pts
2019 Bechereau Couleur Malbec – Montagne-St. Émilion – Concentrated, full-bodied, spicy, floral and peppery, the wine has volume, length and a tannic backdrop. It is also straight-forward without a lot of complexity. The wine is produced from blending 82% Malbec, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot. Not the most complex wine, but still, it is interesting to taste Bordeaux wines with this much Malbec in the blend. 86-88 Pts
2019 Clos Bertineau – Montagne-St. Émilion – From 100% Merlot, the wine is ripe, fresh and juicy with a fruity character, soft textures and the ability to be enjoyed. 87-89 Pts
2019 Clos de Bouard – Montagne-St. Émilion – Rich, lush, opulently textured black, blue and red fruits are what you find on the palate. That is until you work your way over to the medium/full-bodied, sensuous, chocolate, licorice, espresso and fruit-filled, supple textured finish. This outstanding stylish wine from Coralie de Bouard deserves a look at from consumers seeking good wines at more than fair prices. 92-94 Pts
2019 Clos de Bouard Dame de Bouard – Montagne-St. Émilion – Medium-bodied, round, lush and fruity, the licorice and chocolate overtones, with all that ripe, sweet fruit fills everything out nicely. 89-91 Pts
2019 Couronne Reserve – Montagne-St. Émilion – Dark in color, the wine is equally dark in its fruits. Licorice, espresso and even darker chocolate are all over the place. Full-bodied, rich, fat and juicy, this is quite nice and should offer pleasure for 12-15 years. 91-93 Pts
2019 de la Couronne – Montagne-St. Émilion – Deep in color, with layers of ripe, dark fruits, licorice, espresso and crushed stones, the wine is full-bodied, with good richness and length in the finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 Heritage de Negrit Vignobles Lagardere – Montagne-St. Émilion – Medium-bodied, bright, fresh, and bordering the corner of sweet and tart, the wine is juicy and crisp, with a floral edge, soft textures and forward approach. 87-89 Pts
2019 La Bastienne – Montagne-St. Émilion – Classic, medium-bodied, bright, fresh and lifted, the raspberry and semi-tart red cherry fruits are there from start to finish. 85-87 Pts
2019 Montaiguillon – Montagne-St. Émilion – Forward, soft and silky, with a core of fresh, bright red fruits and spice, this will drink well young. 88-90 Pts
2019 Pontet Bayard – Montagne-St. Émilion – Forward, sweet, ripe and juicy, with round textures and a blast of fruit in the finish. This will be great on release. 88-90 Pts
2019 Rocher-Gardat – Montagne-St. Émilion – Sweet and juicy, with a core of delicious, fresh, lifted black and red berries, salty tannins and a fruity, fun-to-taste finish already hits the mark. 90-92 Pts
2019 Rochers Cuvée Prestige – Montagne-St. Émilion – Smoke, crushed rocks, tobacco leaf and ripe fruits work together harmoniously in the perfume. Ripe, lush, round and juicy, the wine is full-bodied, long and complex. The finish is impressive. 90-92 Pts
2019 Roudier – Montagne-St. Émilion – The big blast of dark chocolate in the finish, with all those ripe dark cherries, plums and licorice is a turn on. But before you get there, you get to enjoy layers of soft, round, ripe, lush sweet fruits, flowers and earth. 89-91 Pts
2019 Simon Blanchard Au Champ de la Fenêtre – Montagne-St. Émilion – With flowery overtones, the perfume also shows plum, cherry, earth and licorice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich, velvety-textured, ending with long fat waves of smoky, chocolate-covered plums and espresso beans. The finish keeps on going. 92-94 Pts
2019 Simon Blanchard Guitard – Montagne-St. Émilion – Deep in color, the wine is round, lusciously textured, opulent and rich. The fruit is perfectly ripe, sweet and easily shows off its natural intensity that comes from vines averaging 50 years. The freshness and waves of dark ripe berries in the finish hang with you. 91-93 Pts
2019 Tour Bayard – Montagne-St. Émilion – Silky, lush, round and rich, with layers of ripe, deep, sweet red and black pit fruits and licorice that keeps on going. This hedonistic, well-priced gem will be delicious on release and offer pleasure for at least a decade. 89-91 Pts
2019 Faizeau – Montagne-St. Émilion – Rich, ripe, round and polished, with lush, soft tannins and layers of chocolate covered dark red fruits and the ability to age for a decade or so. 89-91 Pts
2019 Messile-Aubert – Montagne-St. Émilion – Round, ripe, soft, forward and fruity, the wine is medium-bodied, easy to drink wine and offers a lot of fruit filled charm that will be great to enjoy on release. 87-89 Pts
2019 Tour Bayard L’Angelot – Montagne-St. Émilion – Dark in color, with equally dark fruits, and even darker chocolate all over the place, the lushly textured, round wine serves up a lot of fleshy juice. Lush, round, dark, juicy, ripe, sweet, fleshy cherries surrounded by licorice and chocolate in a forward style, and for a fair price! You can drink this young. 89-91 Pts
2019 Vieux-Chateau-Palon – Montagne-St. Émilion – Floral, fruity, soft and silky, with elegant, but present tannins and a long, fleshy, black raspberry cherry and vanilla tinged finish. 89-91 Pts
2019 Bernon Bécot Grand Vin – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Lushly textured, juicy, ripe and fresh, with soft round tannins, dark chocolate and black cherries from start to finish. This will be delicious on release. 88-90 Pts
2019 des Laurets – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Floral and fruity, soft and silky with ripe black raspberries, plums and cherries, and a touch of oak, this medium-bodied early drinker will be great on release. 87-89 Pts
2019 La Vaisinerie – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Medium-bodied, semi tart, bright and fresh with a lean to the fresh, red plum side of the style range, this wine will be best enjoyed early in life. 86-88 Pts
2019 Lafaurie – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Light, fresh, easy-drinking, red berry-oriented wine with soft, elegant tannins and a light-hearted approach. Drink this over the first few years of its life. 85-87 Pts
2019 les Laurets Baron De Rothschild Selection Parcellarie – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Medium-bodied, soft and polished, the chocolate covered fruits are silky and fresh, with good sweetness and lift. 89-91 Pts
2019 Roc du Bécot – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Forward, soft, round, medium-bodied, fruity wine for early drinking pleasure. 86-88 Pts
2019 Soleil – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Round, lush and juicy, with loads of dark cocoa, licorice, black cherry and espresso, the finish is fresh, fruit-filled and already delicious to taste. You can savor this on release, or enjoy it over the following decade. 89-91 Pts
2019 Clarisse – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Silky soft, medium-bodied and fresh, with layers of forward, ripe red fruits. There is a good purity and sweetness in the berries and a polished finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 Guibot La Fourvieille – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – Smoke is the first thing you notice out of the gate before moving to licorice, ripe, red fruits and herbs. Soft, lush and polished with sweet dark red fruits and ripe tannins, this has good length and freshness. 90-92 Pts
2019 La Diligente – Puisseguin-St. Émilion – With a touch of oak, flowers and red fruits on the nose, the wine is soft and supple, with loads of ripe plums and cherries on the mid-palate and in the finish. 87-89 Pts
2019 Cap Saint George – St. Georges-St. Émilion – Mineral-driven, floral, fresh, leafy and cherry-filled to its core, the wine is forward, fruity and round, with soft, ripe fruits on the finish and promises to be even better after a year or two in the cellar to better integrate the wine. 89-91 Pts
