I tasted over 150 wines from 2019 St. Emilion. Because of the large volume of wines tasted, my Saint Emilion report had to be divided into 2 seperate articles. Part 2, this report focuses on all the non Classified Growths from Saint Emilion.
It is important to note that not all the great wines of Saint Emilion are classified Growths. Many vineyards chose not to be classified for a myriad of reasons. In fact, some of the best wines in the Saint Emilion appellation are not classified.
The best 2019 St. Emilion wines are extremely aromatic. The wines are deeply colored. They are ripe, rich, fresh and express a gorgeous sense of purity in the fruits. Texturally, they are silky, sensuous and sexy with ample concentration of flavors and ripe tannins. They should age quit well and many will be accessible young.
St. Emilion is a massive appellation with a myriad of soils and topographies. The best wines came from soils able to handle the warm, dry conditions which are found on the limestone plateau, in the gravel and clay soils close to Pomerol and in the cool, rich, clay terroir in Saint Christophe des Bardes.
Climatically, 2019 St. Emilion wines are the result of a moderate winter. The initial 3 months of the year were average. April was the first difficult month for the appellation.
The cooler climatic conditions in the Right Bank in April slowed the vegetative cycle. Realistic fears of frost hit the region, April 13 and April 14 with icy temperatures for a few nights that hit 0. Growers lit candles and fought back the icy temperatures and fortunately, most of the vines survived. Frost conditions struck a second time, May 5 and May 6.
By the middle of June, everything changed with the start of summer. 2019 Saint Emilion was headed int the right direction. The vines enjoyed warm, sunny and very dry conditions with cool nights allowing acidites to build.
As usual, it is the drop in evening temperatures, (up to 15 C difference) that adds the necessary amount of freshness into the wines. July was even hotter. Fortunately, two July rain storms, most importantly the later hitting July 26, which helped add much needed moisture to the vines. August offered close to perfect summery conditions.
September was mostly warm, sunny and dry until the last part of the month, which delivered much needed water to the soils helping the grapes reach maturity. Harvesting of the Merlot began by mid-late September and by early October, almost everyone had finished picking their Cabernet grapes.
A bit about the 2019 Saint Emilion samples and the process of how they were received and tasted. The majority of 2019 St. Emilion wines were shipped overnight. Most of the 2019 Bordeaux arrived in 2-3 days’ time. Although a few producers managed to ship true overnight, arriving the next day! Almost every wine was cool to the touch on arrival.
When the wines arrived here, they were quickly placed in a wine cellar overnight to relax and cool to cellar temperatures. The following day, the bottles were opened and poured into glasses roughly 15 minutes prior to tasting. All the wines were tasted in the same size Riedel glasses. Wines were served in flights of 3-4 wines from the same appellation.
The following tasting notes cover 2019 Saint Emilion wines from all the non Classified Growths I tasted. The Classified Growths were in Part 1 of my 2019 Saint Emilion report. All of the following 2019 St. Emilion wines were tasted in my home office from mid-May until mid June in non-blind conditions.
2019 Les Angelots de Gracia – Medium-bodied, soft, floral and fruity, with a core of sweet, juicy, fresh, ripe red fruits giving you lift and a nice bite of cherry and red plums in the finish. The wine was made from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 90-92 Pts
2019 Angelus No 3 – A light kiss of oak, cherries and earth are the perfect introduction to this elegant, forward, early-drinking charmer, which delivers its medium-bodied, fresh, red-fruited character with ease. This is perfect for ordering in restaurants, as it needs no decanting. And because the production has been steadily increasing, it is now easier to find on lists. 87-89 Pts
2019 L’Archange – Medium-bodied, forward, early-drinking lighter-styled wine with good freshness, soft textures and a sweet cherry finish. 86-88 Pts
2019 Aromes de Pavie – Medium-bodied. with freshness, soft textures and a fruity approach. The licorice-accented red berries are soft with even softer tannins. You can enjoy this on release, or age it for a bit while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. 89-91 Pts
2019 Art Russe La Grace Dieu des Prieurs – With a smoke, espresso, incense, cherry and oak filled nose, the wine is medium-bodied, bright, lifted and forward, with an oaky, red cherry finish. 85-87 Pts
2019 Les Asteries – Floral, with jammy black raspberries, herbs, leaf and fennel, the wine has soft tannins and a juiciness to the red berries on the palate and in the finish. 91-93 Pts
2019 Badette – Almost inky in color, initially you notice the toasty oak before moving to the array of spices, dark red pit fruits, licorice and oak. Full-bodied, fleshy, flashy, generous and lush, the finish is all the layers of avoirdupois mouth-filling ripe fruits and the oceanic tannins in the endnote. 92-94 Pts
2019 Bel-Air-Ouy – Opening with good color, ripe, sweet juicy plums, licorice galore, chocolate and soft, fresh red fruits, with a tasty finish, this will provide a lot of pleasure over the next 10-12 or 15 years. 89-91 Pts
2019 Bellevue-Mondotte – Dark, with purple accents, but not quite opaque, the wine is full-bodied, rich, deep and intense. There is power, length and purity, yet nothing is too much, everything is working in balance here. The fruit is dark, the tannins and polished finish really stick for close to 50 seconds. 95-97 Pts
2019 Boutisse – Dark, smoky red fruits with a touch of cocoa in the nose. The wine is medium bodied, with a medicinal cherry notes in the round, oaky finish. This could get better if everything better integrates as it matures. 87-89 Pts
2019 de Candale – With a dark ruby color, the wine is round, rich, plush and polished, showing a lot of ripe, sweet pit fruits, jam and black cherries with a dollop of chocolate in the medium-bodied, fresh finish. This should be delicious to drink on release. 89-91 Pts
2019 Cantin – Rich, round, ripe, juicy and fleshy with layers of licorice, smoke, Asian spice, espresso bean and black cherries. Here you find flesh and flash with a juice-filled, fruity finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 Le Carillon de l’Angleus – Smoke, licorice, herbs and plums on the nose, medium-bodied, soft, gentle, red fruits on the palate and a fresh, juicy, fruity, licorice, black cherry and herb filled finish, with a nice amount of lift at the end is what you will find here. The wine was made from blending 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc. 90-92 Pts
2019 Carteau – Dark and fruity, the wine delivers a juicy mouthful of deep, ripe red fruits, licorice, espresso and cocoa. Round, fruity, sweet and lush, give it a bit of time to come together and it will be a delicious wine. 88-90 Pts
2019 Clavis Orea – Deep in color, the wine serves up loads of coffee bean, licorice, black cherry, smoke and wet earth in the nose. On the palate, the wine is round, rich, lush, ripe, velvety and fleshy. The fresh, sweet black fruits and espresso tones keep on coming in the opulent finish. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot and is aged in about 1/3 new French oak. 91-93 Pts
2019 Clos Badon Thunevin – Earthy, with nuances of flowers, espresso, smoke and dark ripe plums, the wine is round, lush and generous on the palate. The fruit, licorice and coffee bean-filled finish tops everything off nicely. 91-93 Pts
2019 Clos des Grandes Versannes – Round, juicy and filled with dark right fruits, the wine offers a ripe mouthful of sweet cherries and a blast of oak from start to finish. 88-90 Pts
2019 Clos Des Menuts L’Excellence – A parcel selection from the estates old vine Merlot is medium-bodied, ripe, fresh, sweet and juicy, with accents of smoke, herbs, forest notes, licorice and ripe pit fruits. Soft and silky, with a nice sweetness and lift to the fruits on the palate, this should drink well with just a few years of age. 89-91 Pts
2019 Clos des Prince – A strong sense of anise-coated red fruits are found here on the nose and palate of this medium-bodied, lighter-styled, early-drinking, brightly fruited wine. 87-89 Pts
2019 Clos Dubreuil – Dark in color, this is all about the deep, chocolate-covered plums, black cherry, licorice, espresso and smoke at its core. Concentrated, lush, flashy, and fleshy in texture, this is a hedonistic treat. The wine was made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. 93-95 Pts
2019 Clos Junet – Medium-bodied with an oaky note on the nose and mouth, the wine is fruity and fresh, with a bright, red berry and green olive finish. This should be a bit better in a few years when the oak integrates. 87-89 Pts
2019 Clos Lardière – Forward, bright, herbal and fresh, with a strong green olive and herb note in the finish to pair with its red fruits, this will be best in its youth. 86-88 Pts
2019 Clos Romanile – Medium-bodied, bright, fresh and juicy, with a kiss of stones, licorice, wet earth and sweet with tart, lifted red fruits, this will be fun to enjoy in its youth. 89-91 Pts
2019 Clos Saint Julien – Bright, crisp and stony, with freshness galore, coupled with sweet, red berries, forest leaf, herb and peppery notes. Medium/full-bodied with ample layers of fruit, rocks and stones, this will need time to soften and to fully integrate all its interesting complexities. 91-93 Pts
2019 Couvent des Jacobins Calicem – Dark in color, the wine exudes black cherries, roasted nuts and cocoa in the nose. Rich, concentrated, lush and velvety in texture, the long finish weaves between chocolate-covered plums and sweet cherries. 92-94 Pts
2019 Croix Cardinale – Dark in color, with a kick of smoke, licorice and chocolate-covered black cherries on the nose, the wine is soft, round, fruity, sweet, plummy and forward. You can enjoy this on release. 90-92 Pts
2019 Croix de Labrie – Inky dark purple in color, you know this is intense from the moment the wine hits your glass. Chocolate, vanilla, blackberry, blueberry, smoke, flowers, licorice, and raspberry notes take no effort to find. There is good lift, loads of crushed rocks, opulent, velvety textures, and layer after layer of chocolate-covered black cherries. This could be the best wine yet from Croix de Labrie! The wine is a blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% alcohol. 95-97 Pts
2019 Edmus – Elegant, soft, forward, fruity, medium-bodied, sweet and juicy red fruits from start to finish here with a slight herbal quality in the finish. This should provide easy drinking pleasure on release. 88-90 Pts
2019 Godeau – Elegant, soft and silky textured, medium-bodied wine with sweet, polished, red fruits, licorice, plums, cherries and espresso on the palate and in the finish. 91-93 Pts
2019 Gracia – Fresh, bright, spiced, juicy fruits with smoke, leaf and thyme accents are all over the place here. Medium-bodied, fruity, sweet and with that all-important freshness, the wine ends with a plum and cocoa lifted finish. 92-94 Pts
2019 Grand-Barrail-Lamarzelle – Medium-bodied, juicy and with an herbal accent to the bright, red plums and olive nuances, you can drink this with ease shortly after release. 86-88 Pts
2019 Haut Brisson – Dark in color, the wine is rich, forward, round and soft. The fruit is ripe, open, lush, sweet and doesn’t hide its charms. The finish is all about the toffee, licorice and dark plums. Give it 4-5 years in the cellar and drink it over the next 10-12 years after that. The wine was produced from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, reaching 13.95 alcohol. Production is close to half its normal volume this year, as a large portion of the vineyard is being replanted. 91-93 Pts
2019 Jean Voisin – Supple textures, lush, dark red fruits, licorice and smoke are at the core of this medium-bodied, ready to go, well-priced, fun to drink Saint Emilion. 89-91 Pts
2019 La Bienfaisance Sanctus – Lush, round, silky and soft, with dark red fruits, espresso, licorice and earthy nuances. Plushy textured with loads of ripe, sweet fruits and licorice in the finish, give this a few years and it’s going to be very good wine. 91-93 Pts
2019 La Chapelle-Lescours – A forward, opulently textured wine, loaded with black and red fruits, licorice, flowers, coffee bean, cocoa and blackberry jam. This will drink well relatively early, but should age and evolve over a few years as well. 89-91 Pts
2019 La Confession – With good color, the wine opens with a nose filled with smoke, espresso, plum liqueur and raspberries. Medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with a finish packed with juicy red fruits and toasty oak, give this some time in the cellar, at least 5 years or more, to get the most of it. 92-94 Pts
2019 La Fleur d’Arthus – A nice big gulp of ripe, juicy, dark black cherries, plums, licorice and a dollop of even darker chocolate in the round textured, fruity pleasing finish. 89-91 Pts
2019 La Fleur St.Emilion – Dark in color, the wine is round, lush and fruity with layers of dark cherries, plums, chocolate, toasty oak and licorice all wrapped up in a plush bow that will be great with a just a year or so in the cellar. 89-91 Pts
2019 La Fleur Morange Mathilde – A superb example of a Bordeaux value wine that sells for a song, yet delivers a wine rich in fruit, round in texture and nuances of smoke, plums, dark cherries and licorice that while it can be enjoyed young, based on how well my 2005’s are doing, can age up to 2 decades. 90-92 Pts
2019 La Fleur Morange La Marchode – Easy-drinking, fresh, bright, medium-bodied and lifted, with soft textures and a forward, early drinking approach that delivers a nice fruity experience. You can enjoy this on release. 89-91 Pts
2019 Laforge – Flowers and fruit work well here on the nose. Full-bodied, round and fruity, with lift and a strong oak presence on the palate, the wine leaves you with blackberries and plums in the finish. If the wood integrates, this will be a better wine. 91-93 Pts
2019 Le Carre – With good color, the wine shows off its 5 spice and black pit fruit character easily. Full-bodied with soft, supple textures, you get a wall of sweet juicy fruit in the creamy finish. The wine is a bend of 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc. 93-95 Pts
2019 Le Dome – Fresh and stony, with good purity to the plums, cherries and blackberry, this wine offers additional complexities of spice box, crushed rock, licorice, mint and espresso. There is ample lift, weight, concentration and freshness, along with a wealth of fruit to keep you interested. 95-97 Pts
2019 Les Gravières – Espresso, black fruit, jam and smoke on the nose start things off. On the palate, the wine is round, forward and fruity with a dark coffee bean note accompanying the dark cherries in the finish. This should drink well on release. 87-89 Pts
2019 L’Eveche – Forward, soft, medium-bodied and fruity with an easy-going, crowd-pleasing character for early drinking consumption. 86-88 Pts
2019 Leydet-Valentin – With a nice sense of minerality, round, dark red pit fruits and leafy nuances, the wine is smoky with a tinge of bitter chocolate and dark red fruits on the palate. 88-90 Pts
2019 l’Hermitage Lescours – Dark and inky, you find a nice florality here coupled with all that ripe plum, licorice and cherry on the nose. Quite sweet, with a lot of oak surrounding the cherries and plums on the medium-bodied palate, this will be delicious with just a few years in the cellar. 89-91 Pts
2019 Lif – Dark in color with a purple accent to the deep ruby color, the wine is lush, rich, full-bodied and opulently textured. The dark plums, chocolate, blackberry and boysenberry taste great and feel even better. Texturally the wine is plush, the tannins are velvety and the finish delivers layer after layer of dark red and black fruit. Give this between 7-10 years and you will have a very special treat here. The wine is produced from blending 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. 96-98 Pts
2019 Lucia – Dark, round, opulent, forward, lush and rich, this is all about the wealthy of ripe sweet, fruits, licorice and opulent, in your face textures that make this such a hit. 91-93 Pts
2019 Lynsolence – Dark garnet in color, the wine is floral in nature with blackberry, plum, black cherry, cocoa and licorice on the nose. Lush, round, ripe and juicy, with loads of sweet, dark red fruits bursting with flavor and freshness, the finish keeps on going with a nice touch of minerality in the endnote. 92-94 Pts
2019 MagrezFombrauge – Dark, almost inky in color, the full-bodied, concentrated, rich, intense and equally dense wine is loaded to the gills with layer after layer of voluptuous, opulent, ripe dark fruits, chocolate and licorice. Long and mouth-filling, this wine is decadence in a glass. A blend of 70% Merlot with 30% Cabernet Franc. 94-96 Pts
2019 Mangot – Cherries, flowers, plums and thyme create the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, elegant, silky and fresh, leaving with you sweet, ripe, juicy red fruits and a touch of cocoa on the back end. 90-92 Pts
2019 Mangot Todeschini – Deep in color, with equally dark fruit to match, the wine is all about the core of fresh, black raspberries, chocolate covered plums, espresso and maraschino cherries in the nose. The wine is richly textured with a finish that kicks in with latent notes of fennel, cocoa and black cherries. The wine is aging in a combination of new, French oak barrels and clay amphora. Give this 4-5 years in the cellar before popping a cork. 92-94 Pts
2019 Moine Vieux – Medium-bodied, soft, fresh and bright, with an easy-to-like cherry and red plum character that was made to enjoy in its youth. 88-90 Pts
2019 Mondou – Looks can be deceiving. But not in this case. The super-sized bottle matches the big, outgoing character of the fruit here. Big, but never avoirdupois, the voluptuous nature gets noticed due to its multiple layers of decadent, ripe fruits. Black, red and blue, with a box of licorice, polished tannins and a long, mouth-filling finish are what you are going to experience. This is my first time tasting this wine and I hope it is not going to be my last. 92-94 Pts
2019 Montlisse – Dark with purple accents, the nose of flowers, licorice, spice, smoke and dark red pit fruits resonate. Rich, round, lush and plush, with silky tannins and a blast of sweet chocolate covered fruits taste and feel great. 92-94 Pts
2019 Paradis – Luscious, full-bodied, rich and sexy, this ready-to-go, delicious, plush wine is loaded with licorice-covered, black fruits. While clearly opulent in nature, the wine retains its freshness and vibrancy. 91-93 Pts
2019 du Parc – Blending 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc produced a medium-bodied, soft, easy to drink, flowery, fresh, red berry dominated wine that will be drinkable on release. 87-89 Pts
2019 Pas de l’Ane – Soft, forward, round, medium-bodied, fruity, red berry filled wine for early drinking pleasure. 85-87 Pts
2019 Patris Querre – Licorice, flowers, espresso and cherries on the nose and palate. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, forward and easy to drink. This will be fine to drink on release. 87-89 Pts
2019 Pierre 1er – Medium-bodied with a nose offering licorice, smoke, dark cocoa and cherries, the wine is round, fruity and a bit oaky, with cherries and dark chocolate in the finish. 89-91 Pts
2019 Petit Gravet Aine – Underbrush, green leafy notes, herbs, crushed rocks and red berries to start, the wine is stony, fresh, vibrant and racy with its fresh red fruits, spice and salty tannins. Give it time in the cellar to develop and it will be a much better wine and perhaps the best vintage of Petit Gravet Ainé produced yet. 92-94 Pts
2019 Pierre de Lune – Deeply colored, with dark red fruits, espresso beans, smoke, spice and licorice on the nose. The palate is round, lush, fresh and juicy. The oak is a bit prominent at the moment, as are the tannins. But with 5 years in the cellar, everything should come together nicely. 90-92 Pts
2019 Poesia – Crushed rocks, stones, smoked red fruits, herbs and flowers round out the perfume. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, silky, fresh and vibrant, showing lift, energy, length and purity in the red pit fruit, cocoa and licorice filled finish. The wine was made from blending 70% Merlot with 35% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.5% alcohol. 93-95 Pts
2019 Pontet Labrie – Forward, lush and fruity, with a load of round, plush sweet black cherries, black licorice and black coffee. Medium/full-bodied, you will find layers of ripe, juicy fruits here. Chateau Pontet Labrie is a small production wine of only 300 cases from Jonathan Maltus that is made exclusively for the British merchant Honest Grapes. 89-91 Pts
2019 Quintus – Flowers, cherries, plums, mint and earthy notes pop in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is sweet, fresh, refined, soft and expresses purity in the fruit. The Grand Vin, which comes from only 26% of the crop was produced from blending 55% Merlot with 45% Cabernet Franc, reaching 15.3% alcohol. 93-95 Pts
2019 Rocheyron – The luxuriously textured fruits with their velvet drenched tannins is just what the doctor ordered to accompany the multiple layers of sweet, pure cherries, dark cocoa and blueberry. Clearly, the wine borders on decadence. Long, silky and palate-staining, with one of the best finishes in this vintage, the freshness is perfect here, making sure this hedonistic thrill ride is never tiring to drink. 96-98 Pts
2019 Rolland-Maillet – Round, soft and silky, medium-bodied and filled with charm, sweet, fresh, spicy, polished, dark red pit fruits, vanilla and licorice, this is already quite nice to taste. 90-92 Pts
2019 Roylland – Soft, silky, round and fresh, the fruit is ripe, sweet and juicy, leaving you with a medium-bodied, fresh, licorice and fruit-filled finish. 87-89 Pts
2019 Saintayme – Floral, earthy and smoky, with the addition of licorice and vanilla, the wine is medium-bodied, fresh, sweet and juicy, with layers of ripe, dark plums, cherries and cocoa. Soft and silky, with richness and approachability, this 100% Merlot wine lingers with all its freshness and fruit in the finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 Sanctus – Rich, round, ripe and juicy, with layers of dark red fruits, licorice, espresso, dark chocolate and floral notes. The wine is ripe, fresh and loaded with fruit, a hint of spice and mint to top things off. 92-94 Pts
2019 SoutardCadet – Dark in color, and with fruit that is even darker, this voluptuous beauty resonates with its layers of lush, ripe, deep, sweet, fresh fruits, polished tannins and long, fruit-filled finish. The wine is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 93-95 Pts
2019 Tauzinat L’Hermitage – Medium-bodied, fresh, easy drinking, foursquare, uncomplicated wine for early drinking pleasure. 85-87 Pts
2019 Tertre Roteboeuf – Earthy crushed raspberries are all over the place here, on the nose and palate. Mouth-filling, flashy, vibrant, juicy, sweet and fresh, there is an exotic quality to the texture that is unique to Tertre Roteboeuf. There is good concentration, length, complexity, expansiveness and a uniqueness of character that makes you want to know more about the wine, making you take sip after sip. 96-98 Pts
2019 Tour Baladoz – Medium-bodied, soft, open, spicy red fruit dominated wine for early drinking, fresh, fruit-filled pleasure. 86-88 Pts
2019 Tour Saint Christophe – Dark red, purple in color, the nose pops with flowers, licorice, incense, herbs and dark red berries. On the palate, the wine is silky, fresh, sweet, full-bodied and concentrated. Yet, there is no heaviness. Everything is in proportion. Better balanced than 2018, this is another step-up in quality here. If you are not yet on the Tour Saint Christophe bandwagon, get on it before prices rise. The wine is made from blending 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.3% alcohol. 94-96 Pts
Chateau Tour Saint Christophe and all the wines from Vignobles K were the first 2019 Bordeaux wines I was able taste this year. My Whatsapp tasting with the director Jean-Christophe Meyrou was able my first online tasting session. It was a great way introduction to the vintage.
2019 Trianon – This is a property that gets better with each vintage. The fruit is ripe, soft and sweet, with round tannins and comes along with a blast of licorice to soften the salty tannins in the finish. 89-91 Pts
2019 Trimoulet – Medium-bodied, round, plush and polished, the oak is still a bit out in front of all the fruit, licorice and smoke. Give it some time to better integrate. That being said, this is another vineyard that has made a big jump in quality, which is due in part to bringing in the team of Michel Rolland to consult. 89-91 Pts
2019 Valandraud 3 de Valandraud – Fresh, fruity and with a nice mouthful of sweet, juicy, fleshy dark red fruits and soft round textures, this baby Valandraud is already delicious. Enjoy this young, while waiting for its big sister to evolve. 89-91 Pts
2019 Virginie de Valandraud – Dark and smoky, with licorice, espresso and ripe black cherries on the nose, the wine is medium-bodied, round, soft, plush and already approachable. You can drink this young and over its first decade or so of life. 90-92 Pts
2019 Vieux Chateau Mazerat – Take a pallet of crushed rocks and stone, add molten chocolate, and dark espresso bean and you get the perfume here. Full-bodied, crisp and fresh, with an energetic blast of fruits and more stone are found in the decidedly salty finish. It will take some time in the cellar before this is ready to show its stuff. 93-95 Pts
2019 Vieux Chantecaille – Medium-bodied, soft, silky and fresh, with a center of sweet, lifted cherries and licorice will be easy to enjoy in its youth due to its forward approachable style. 89-91 Pts
