I tasted over 150 wines from 2019 St. Emilion. Because of the volume of wines tasted, I am publishing the 2019 Saint Emilion wine report in 2 articles. Part 1, this report focuses on all the Classified Growths. Part 2, which will be published tomorrow covers all the other 2019 Saint Emilion wines tasted.
2019 St. Emilion wines are the result of a moderate winter. Until April, the vintage was moving in the right direction with an average first 3 months of the year. April was the first difficult month for the appellation.
The cooler climatic conditions in the Right Bank in April slowed the vegetative cycle. Realistic fears of frost hit the region, April 13 and April 14 with icy temperatures for a few nights that hit 0. Growers lit candles and fought back the icy temperatures and fortunately, most of the vines survived. Frost conditions struck a second time, May 5 and May 6.
By the middle of June, everything changed with the start of summer. 2019 Saint Emilion was headed int the right direction. The vines enjoyed warm, sunny and very dry conditions with cool nights allowing acidites to build.
As usual, it is the drop in evening temperatures, (up to 15 C difference) that adds the necessary amount of freshness into the wines. July was even hotter. Fortunately, two July rain storms, most importantly the later hitting July 26, which helped add much needed moisture to the vines. August offered close to perfect summery conditions.
September was mostly warm, sunny and dry until the last part of the month, which delivered much needed water to the soils helping the grapes reach maturity. Harvesting of the Merlot began by mid-late September and by early October, almost everyone had finished picking.
2019 Saint Emilion wines at their best are stunning. They are aromatic, silky, sensuous and fresh with good concentration of flavors and ripe tannins.
The vineyards located on the limestone plateau, in the gravel and clay soils close to Pomerol and in the cool, rich, clay terroir in Saint Christophe des Bardes all produced incredible wines.
A bit about the 2019 Saint Emilion samples and the process of how they were received and tasted. The majority of 2019 St. Emilion wines were shipped overnight. Most of the 2019 Bordeaux arrived in 2-3 days’ time. Although a few producers managed to ship true overnight, arriving the next day! Almost every wine was cool to the touch on arrival.
When the wines arrived here, they were quickly placed in a wine cellar overnight to relax and cool to cellar temperatures. The following day, the bottles were opened and poured into glasses roughly 15 minutes prior to tasting. All the wines were tasted in the same size Riedel glasses. Wines were served in flights of 3-4 wines from the same appellation.
The following tasting notes cover 2019 Saint Emilion wines from all the Classified Growths I tasted. The only major Classified Growths I was not able to taste were Cheval Blanc and Ausone as well as Beau-Sejour Becot, which did not send samples to any writers.
I hope to taste them the next time I am in Bordeaux. All of the following 2019 St. Emilion wines were tasted in my home office from mid-May until mid June in non-blind conditions.
2019 Angelus – Deep, almost opaque ruby in color, the wine loads you up with flowers, licorice, smoke, wet earth, spice, vanilla along with red with black fruits on the nose. Classically styled,( in a good way,) the wine is precise, focused, energetic and pure. Silk with structure are what you notice on the palate along with multiple layers of perfectly ripe, concentrated plums, cherries and blackberries that linger and expand. The wine was made from blending 60% Merlot with 40% Cabernet Franc reaching 14.5 Alcohol with a pH of 3.65. The wine is aging in 100% new, French oak, however, 40% of the Cabernet Franc is aged in foudres, allowing the oak to have almost finished integrating into the wine. The harvest took place September 21-October 9. 97 – 99 Pts
It took a bit of effort to receive the wines. But the staff at Angelus were troopers sending 3 times. The first two tries were stuck in customs. But the third time was a charm. I had a fabulous Zoom chat with Stephane de Bouard and making the call a true family affair, Hubert de Bouard and Jean-Bernard Grenie joined the session. Not only did we discuss 2019 vintage, but the progress and attention that is being paid to Carillon Angelus and their third wine No 3 d’Angelus.
2019 Balestard La Tonnelle – Medium-bodied, fresh, bright and chewy, with ripe red berries and cocoa from start to finish, the wine leaves you with lift and freshness along with more red fruits and a hit of cocoa in the finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 Barde Haut – Truffle, smoke, mint, charcoal, flowers, cocoa and sweet red berries open the perfume. On the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, lush, silky and rich. Luxuriously textured on the palate, with all the ripe, juicy, sweet plums and cherries you can imagine coated with licorice and chocolate, this wine tastes and feels great in the finish. The wine was made from 75% Merlot with 25% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.5% alcohol. Clearly, this is a new level of quality for Barde Haut that will age quite nicely for at least 2 decades or longer. 94-96 Pts
2019 Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse – Deep in color, this is beautiful from start to finish. Elegant, full-bodied, sensual, sexy, fresh and sweet, there is ample concentration and length here. The fruit is ripe and clean with a fabulous sense of purity in its essence. The finish holds your attention, making you want to take another swirl, sniff and sip to see what else you can find here. The wine is made from blending 86% Merlot with 14% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place September 24-October 7. The production is well above last year with close to 2,000 cases produced. This is one of the stars of the vintage. 97-99 Pts
2019 Belair-Monange – Floral in nature, you also find smoke, incense, red fruits, spice box, rocks, stones and oceanic notes in the perfume. The wine is rich, concentrated, fresh, vibrant and silky. The fruits glide across your palate leaving a trail of sweet cherries, salt and plums that hang with you. 96-98 Pts
2019 Bellefont-Belcier – With pungent aromas of crushed rock and stone in the forefront, the nose quickly moves to the floral side before the red berries, smoke and licorice kick in. Concentrated, with velvet textured, salty tannins and waves of sweet, ripe, fresh berries, the finish really sticks with you. The wine was made from blending 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, reaching 13.95% alcohol. The wine is aged in 40% new French oak barrels with 20% of the wine aging in foudres. 94-96 Pts
2019 Bellevue – Showing a nice deep color, the wine exudes a dark berry, truffle, chocolate and plum filled character. Round, lush, polished and concentrated, the finish offers length and complexity. 93-95 Pts
2019 Cadet Bon – Dark red fruits, chocolate-covered cherries, licorice, lush, ripe tannins and silky textures coupled with a nice gulp of deep, dark fruits and the essence of crushed stone in the finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 La Commanderie – Already open, medium-bodied, soft, sweet and fresh, the tannins are polished and the fruits are ripe, earthy, sweet and lifted. 90-92 Pts
2019 Canon La Gaffeliere – Deep in color, initially you notice mint, flowers, forest leaf and red and black fruits. Rich, supple, silky and fresh, with an opulent, fruit-filled mid-palate and finish, the chalky sensations coming from crushed rocks, stone and a hint of spice with more of that gorgeous mint and pure pit fruits taste and feels just great in the finish. The wine was made from blending 49% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. 95-97 Pts
With an extensive array of wines, a Zoom chat with Stephan von Neipperg can take quite a bit of time. But it was worth it. From top to bottom, all of his estates had a banner year. Canon La Gaffeliere is probably the finest vintage ever produced at the property.
2019 Cap de Mourlin – With a nice dark hue, the wine shoots out with its perfume of oak, licorice, vanilla bean and plummy notes. On the palate, the wine is round, juicy, medium/full-bodied and fruity, with a nice lingering dark cherry finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 Chauvin – Medium-bodied, fresh, bright, crisp and juicy, with a focus on its red fruit, licorice, smoke and earthy character. Give this a few years in the cellar for it to further flesh out and soften. 89-91 Pts
2019 Clos de Sarpe – If you want to understand minerality in a wine, this is the one to teach you. Inky in color, the wine tastes of crushed rocks and stone. The range of black and blue fruit paired with licorice and smoke works and keeps on working. Big, powerful and stony, you will need patience with this gem. Give it 15 or more years before pulling a cork. You will be happy you waited. The wine is made from blending 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. 93-95 Pts
2019 Clos des Jacobins – Fruity, lush, round and rich, with loads of ripe dark berries, chocolate, espresso and licorice, the wine offers a lot of pleasure in every sniff and sip. 90-92 Pts
2019 Clos Fourtet – Deep in color, the wine opens with licorice, flowers, smoke, dark cocoa, wet earth and truffle nuances. The wine is fresh, rich, concentrated and balanced. With silky tannins, elegance and purity to the fruits, the supple texture combines the purity of fruit, lift, refinement and harmony in the fruit-filled, spicy finish. The wine blends 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.5% alcohol. The harvest took place September 24, ending October 10. 95-97 Pts
2019 Clos St. Martin – Polished, silky fruits, velvet-textured tannins, and a wave of ripe, sweet black cherries, licorice, herbs and espresso are what you will find here before working your way to the fruit-filled, creamy finish. The wine was made from a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 94-96 Pts
2019 Clos-de-lOratoire – Earthy, forest floor, black and red fruit aromas dominate the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, fresh, soft and elegant, with a core of crushed stones, red fruit, licorice and lifted, energetic fruits, with chalky tannins in the finish. The wine was made from blending 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc. 92-94 Pts
2019 Corbin – With loads of ripe, elegant, soft, dark, sexy plums, silky tannins, freshness and a fabulous mouth feel, this medium-bodied, finesse-driven wine is already fabulous to taste. This could be the finest vintage of Corbin produced yet. It will be beautiful to taste with just a few years of bottle age, and it will continue to develop and provide pleasure for at least another 15 years or so after that. 92 – 94 Pts
2019 Cote de Baleau – Flowery, with a basket of fresh picked raspberries, licorice and smoke, this wine is medium-bodied, forward, soft and fruity. You can enjoy this on release and over the next decade easily. The wine blends 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.8%. The wine should sell for roughly $25 making this one of the top value wines of the vintage. This is worth buying by the case. 89-91 Pts
2019 Couspaude – Roasted espresso beans, smoke, licorice, campfire embers and red fruits create the nose. On the palate, the wine is fat, round, sweet and juicy, leaving you with espresso and deep red berries in the round finish. 91-93 Pts
2019 Couvent des Jacobins – Showing nice color, the wine starts off with aromas of flowers, black raspberries and even blacker cherries with licorice. Medium/full-bodied with silky, polished tannins and the perfect amount of freshness and chocolate in the red berry-filled finish. The wine is made from a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 91-93 Pts
2019 Dassault – Deep in color, the wine loads you up with its roasted coffee bean, smoke, licorice, herbs and cherry tinged perfume. Ripe, fleshy and fresh, with a blast of black cherries and oak in the finish, give this a few years to come together before pulling a cork. 90-92 Pts 90 – 92 Pts
2019 de Ferrand – Medium-bodied, sweet and tart red fruits with an herbed, olive note in the bright finish. 87-89 Pts
2019 Destieux – Black cherry, espresso and coffee bean are front and center here. The round, ripe, full-bodied, plush, juicy wine comes with intensity, and more than enough volume and energetic lift to deliver its dark plum, spice, smoke, licorice and dark cherry finish with ease. The wine is a blend of 66% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon. 92-94 Pts
2019 Faugeres – Dark in color, the wine is packed with round, fat fruits, licorice and soft tannins. The mid-palate and endnotes come with a ripe, sweet, fruity finish that carries on nicely. This wine is forward in style and should be great to enjoy close to its release. The wine was made from a blend of 70% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. 91-93 Pts
2019 Faurie de Souchard – Floral, with smoke, espresso, licorice, coffee bean and dark red fruits on the nose. Deep and plush, with loads of ripe, dark red berries, the finish is still a bit oaky. Give this 4-5 years to better integrate before pulling a cork. 89-91 Pts
2019 Figeac – Beautifully dark, almost purple/garnet in color, the wine gets you going with its nose of flowers, blackberry, dark plums, spice, smoke, vanilla, cherries, licorice and tobacco leaf. As good as that is, when the wine hits your palate, the show starts with its majestic textures. Voluptuous, opulent and silky, the wine seeks attention, but it’s not loud, it’s discreet. Classic and yet, voluminous, the flamboyant palate-coating finish, with its multiple layers of fruit stays with you for close to 60 seconds. The wine was made from a classic blend of 36% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot reaching 14.1% alcohol with a pH of 3.7 and is aging in 100% new, French oak barrels. The harvest took place September 13 – October 7. 97-99 Pts
Figeac is clearly on a roll. 2012 was the first year where you find more richness in the wines. 3 years later, 2015 got the ball rolling. 2016, 2018 and now 2019! Over Zoom, I was fortunate to discuss the 2019 Figeac in detail with the Director Frederic Faye. We compared and contrasted previous recent vintages as well. While I might favor by a hair the more opulent 2018, this is really splitting hairs because the 2019 is just an incredible wine!
2019 Fleur Cardinale – Medium/full-bodied with a real sweetness and soft, lush quality to the fruit, this wine delivers more freshness than you usually find here in all the gorgeous black, red and blue fruits. The wine is a blend of 76% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. 92-94 Pts
2019 Fombrauge – Dark in color with a blast of licorice, forest leaf, herbs, espresso and plums get you going. Rich, round, fruity, with layers of ripe, lusciously textured dark plums, licorice and smoke, all topped off with cocoa, the wine was made from blending 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 90-92 Pts
2019 Fonplegade – Black raspberries, plums, flowers, smoke, crushed rocks, vanilla and stones open the nose. On the palate, you find silky tannins, sweet red, polished, soft, ripe fruits that express purity over power. Medium-bodied and finesse in style, give this 6-8 years in the cellar before opening a bottle to allow for more nuances to develop. The wine was made from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and reached 14.5% alcohol. The harvest took place September 20 to October 5. 93-95 Pts
2019 Fonroque – Medium-bodied, forward, ripe, sweet and fruity with softness, lift and round tannins, this is even better than their 2018. 89-91 Pts
2019 Franc-Mayne – Medium-bodied, soft and refined, with sweet, juicy, dark red fruits, licorice and salty tannins. This should drink well with just a few years of bottle age. 90-92 Pts 90 – 92 Pts
2019 Grand Mayne – Quite floral, you also find notes of licorice, espresso and earthy nuances to accompany all that beautiful, ripe, red fruit. Soft, silky and refined, this elegant, medium-bodied charmer will be better with 5-7 years in the cellar and should age and evolve for another 2 decades after that. 92-94 Pts
2019 Grand Pontet – Espresso, smoke, licorice and ripe dark red berries galore here. Medium-bodied, round, soft and juicy. This is best Grand Pontet ever produced! 89-91 Pts 89 – 91 Pts
2019 Grand-Corbin-Despagne – Floral, with black and blue fruit, wet earth, smoke and licorice, the wine is silky and polished with an elegant nature, leaving with more of that delicious black and blue fruit in the finish. This could become the finest vintage of Grand Corbin-Despagne ever produced. 91-93 Pts 91 – 93 Pts
2019 Grandes Murailles – Dark garnet in color, the wine is all about the smoke, licorice, espresso bean, flowers, wet earth, and black with dark red fruits. Opulently textured, sexy in style, long and velvety in the finish, give this 4-5 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 2 decades as it ages and evolves. The wine is made from 100% old vine Merlot. 92-94 Pts
2019 Haut-Sarpe – Medium-bodied, fresh, sweet and juicy, with a bright core of spicy red fruits and herbs with a lifted, red berry finish. 89-91 Pts
2019 Jean Faure – With a beautiful dark hue, the wine shows a complex set of aromatics, lush, silky, sexy textures, richness and complexity. The finish exudes a myriad of spicy red and black fruits, licorice and herbs. Part of what makes this wine so interesting is the blend featuring a high proportion of Cab Franc in the mix using 65% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot and 5% Malbec. 92-94 Pts
2019 La Dominique – Celebrating 50 years under the ownership of the Fayat family, the first thing you notice is the dark color. Roses, dark chocolate, espresso, herbs, plums and black cherry scents. With more density than you find in previous vintages, you also find a supple, soft, sensuous, finesse oriented wine with silky, chalky tannins and layers of deep, dark, ripe fruits that express their purity in the long finish. The wine was made from a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine reached 15% alcohol, which is impossible to notice and a 3.7 pH. The Grand Vin comes from 60% of the harvest. 94-96 Pts
2019 La-Gaffeliere – Rich, plush, silky textured wine with layers of ripe, sweet, fresh, juicy, dark red fruits, licorice, earth, smoke and espresso notes. Full-bodied, concentrated and with a round, luscious, fruit filled finish with ripe, fresh, plums, cherries, thyme, cocoa and crushed rocks in the endnote. 93-95 Pts
2019 La Marzelle – Deep, dense and intense, with non-stop waves of licorice, dark red fruits, cocoa and coffee bean. The wine is round, fleshy, fresh and the lift in all the sweet fruits on the palate make this all come together perfectly. The wine is a blend 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 92-94 Pts
2019 La Serre – Medium-bodied, soft, approachable and with a juicy, fresh, plummy core of berries and herbs, this will drink best in its youth. 89-91 Pts
2019 La-TourFigeac – Flowers and cherries in the nose come out easily before encountering the fresh, lifted red berries, minerality and cocoa notes in the soft, polished, silky, medium-bodied finish. 90-92 Pts
2019 La-Fleur-Morange – Produced from 100 year old vines which provide fabulous concentration, the wine is ripe, rich, opulent and loaded with licorice, smoke, flowers, black and blue fruit, espresso and wet earth. With a good depth of flavor, the fruit covers your palate and hangs with you in the finish. 93-95 Pts
2019 Laniote – The best vintage of Laniote ever produced. Medium-bodied, forward, soft and seductive, with layers of polished, ripe, lush fruits. Clearly things are on the upswing here. This wine is a huge step-up from previous years. 90-92 Pts
2019 Larcis Ducasse – Like walking into a flower market with cherries and plums all over the floor, the wine is fresh, silky, long and stony. The salty tannins are ripe, long and there is a fabulous oceanic note in the finish that carries. Not as powerful as the 2018, but there is perhaps better purity and a more approachable, sensuous style. Made from blending 88% Merlot with 12% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place September 25 to October 7. 95-97 Pts
2019 Laroque – The deep, dark color has a purple to the sheen that looks great in the glass. Quite floral in nature, the nose is assisted by smoke, spice box, espresso, plum, dark chocolate and blueberry. Rich, sensuous, lush and silky there is a freshness that keeps everything moving briskly. The finish is all about the ripe, sweet, deep fruits, and salty minerality. This is even better than the 2018, which says a lot. The wine blends 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.5 alcohol with a pH of 3.44. One of the new players in the Saint Emilion sweepstakes, grab this wine by the case due to its balance between high quality and low price. Eventually, prices will rise. Remember, you heard it here first. 94-96 Pts
2019 Laroze – Aromatics of licorice and smoke, with fresh, ripe, dark red fruits permeate the wine. Medium-bodied, silky and fresh with an olive, herb and spicy, cocoa and red berry finish is what you find here. 89-91 Pts
2019 Le Chatelet – Medium-bodied, round, forward, soft and fruity wine that will provide ample pleasure on release and over the next decade. 86-88 Pts
2019 Le Prieure – Dark garnet in color, the wine offers flowers, spice, licorice, stones and plum in the nose, Soft, silky and seductive, with a medium-bodied palate, the finish carries on with freshness and purity in the fruits as well as a saline quality in the finish. 91-93 Pts
2019 Monbousquet – Starting out with salty aromas meshed with blackberry, black cherry, licorice and assorted dark fruits, this is much deeper, darker and fleshier than other recent vintages. The finish serves up a long wave of lushly textured, polished fruits and ripe tannins. The wine is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. 92-94 Pts
2019 Moulin du Cadet – Deep, dark, lush and fruity, with supple, polished tannins and layer after layer of ripe, black cherry, plum and blackberries. Full-bodied, round and filled with ripe, dark, sweet, juicy fruits, this is just gorgeous from start to finish. The wine comes from 100% old vine Merlot reaching 14.5% alcohol and trust me, you will never notice, as everything is in balance and harmony. 92-94 Pts
2019 Pavie – Almost opaque in color, the complex nose, with its barbecue, flower, crushed rock, cherry liqueur, blackberry, plum, smoke and espresso is inviting. Concentrated, lush, full-bodied, mouth-filling and palate-staining, yet with all that going on, nothing is too much here, everything is in balance. The opulent, velvet drenched fruit really holds it own in the finish. 96-98 Pts
I received two samples of 2019 Pavie. The first was an incomplete blend, as 1 lot was left out of the blend. The second sample was more representative of the final blend. I felt rather pleased and quite popular for a moment as my second sample was supposed to be sent Neal Martin!
2019 Pavie Macquin – With a dark ruby hue, the wine is filled with fresh flowers, incense, smoke, crushed rock and piquant dark red fruits. On the palate, the wine is fresh, juicy, sweet, lively and long. The finish, with its ripe, stony red fruits has good volume and persistence. 95-97 Pts
2019 Peby Faugeres – Inky in hue, the wine is full-bodied, lush, polished and mouth-filling. Long, rich and opulently textured, you also find lift and verve in the combination of black and blue fruits. The endnote with its luscious plums, chocolate and licorice has a sweet black cherry note that stands out at the end of the long finish. The wine was produced using 100% old vine Merlot. 95-97 Pts
2019 Ripeau – With a deep, dark, hue, the plum liqueur, black cherry, chocolate fudge, flower, coffee bean and plum scents shine on the nose. On the palate, the wine is lush, opulent, fresh and concentrated, providing a big, juicy gulp of perfectly ripe, opulent fruits. The new owners continue investing in the vineyard and cellars with the desire to make the best wine possible. This is a property to watch. 93-95 Pts
2019 Rochebelle – Round, medium-bodied, soft and forward, with an early drinking, soft, crowd-pleasing character that will be fun to taste on release. 88-90 Pts
2019 Saint-Georges-Cote-Pavie – Open, forward and medium-bodied, this will deliver pleasure with not much aging, allowing you to savor the plums, earthy minerality, licorice and underbrush tones on the nose and in the finish. 88-90 Pts
2019 Sansonnet – Almost opaque in color, the perfume here hits it! The strong essence of licorice, vanilla, black plum and even blacker cherry. Full-bodied, voluptuous, lush and sexy with layer after layer of super-ripe, fresh gorgeous fruits, soft, velvet tannins and length that sticks. The wine blends 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc reaching 15% alcohol, with no touch of heat. 94-96 Pts
2019 Trotte Vieille – Dark garnet in hue, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and intense. The unique sensation of minerality is on full display here with all its rocks, stones and oceanic character. The fruit is vibrant, round, sweet, long and clean. Everything is in harmony here. The complex aromatic’s along with the richly textured, concentrated mouthfeel, silky tannins and long finish is just great. Give it 7-9 years of aging before pulling a cork and enjoy it over the next 20 years or so. Made from a blend of 49% Cabernet Franc, 48% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. 94-96 Pts
2019 Valandraud – Deep dark red with purple accents in its hue, the wine provides a beautiful freshness to the ripe, sweet, juicy cherries, espresso and licorice. Not as powerful or as concentrated as some recent vintages, instead you discover more, energy, refinement, elegance and purity in the lingering fruits. 95-97 Pts
2019 Villemaurine – Bitter chocolate, plums, licorice and espresso lead the way to a supple textured, lush mouthful of ripe black plums, dark cherries, smoke, licorice and cocoa. 91-93 Pts
