By now, I imagine you’re clearly aware that 2016 Bordeaux produced a plethora of exciting wines in the Right Bank and the Left Bank. Yes, Cabernet Sauvignon is King in this vintage. But there are also sublime wines from Pomerol and St. Emilion that rock, due to the ripeness of Merlot. In a semi-interesting campaign, 2016 Bordeaux turned out to be more if a tepid campaign. Wines offered for prices consumers are willing to pay have moved. Wines that for many reasons left consumers with ennui, remain unsold. While it’s always an interesting exercise to see how the market is taking the 2016 Bordeaux wines to heart, on a pure quality level, there are numerous fabulous wines that deserve to be tasted.
With that in mind, here, you find the best 100 Wines from the 2016 Bordeaux Vintage wth not only tasting notes and scores, but blends, alcohol levels and prices, along with a comparison to what the state charged for the wine last year. To be fair, prices on their own do not tell the entire story. Better wines should sell for more money. So if a producer made a better wine in 2016 than they did in 2015, (And there are several chateau that did!) they deserve to price their wine higher. Other chateau, that did not make better wine, and raised prices are having a difficult time in the marketplace, with justification. So, please keep all that in mind, when considering what 2016 Bordeaux wines to buy. And remember, buy responsibly.

The wine was produced from a unique blending of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.5% Tarnay Coulant and .5% Castet. The Tarnay Coulant and Castet were used in pre phylloxera Bordeaux. Due to these non AOC allowed grape varietals, the wine will be sold as a Vin de France. The wine is made from the lowest yields in all of Bordeaux at 10 hectoliters per hectare. Aged on its lees in 100% new, French, oak barrels for between 28 to 30 months before bottling, the extended aging time is due to the fact the grapes all come from 100% ungrafted vines, meaning that in theory, this is about as close as you are going to get to wines produced in the 19th century, albeit with a lot more selection, and probably more new oak barrels, which have a longer aging time.
Because of severe frost damage, only Liber Pater was produced this year, they did not make any white wine, Denarius of Clos de Landrias. 93 – 95 Pts
2016 Malartic Lagraviere – Licorice, dark cherry, espresso and smoke create the character. Full bodied, richly, concentrated and intense, the fruit is fat, yet, crunchy, spicy and juicy. It offers volume, and freshness with depth of flavor. Until now, I thought the 2015 was the best vintage from Malartic, but it looks like I am going to change my mind, as this year is probably better. Produced from a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 13.5% alcohol. The harvest took place from September 29 to October 20. 93 – 95 Pts
2016 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux – Ruby red in color, this is what Japan must smell like when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Followed by an array of sweet plum and earthy notes, this medium-bodied wine is elegant and sophisticated with sweet, fresh red berries in the finish. Balance, finesse, refinement is its mantra. The wine was produced from a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, reaching 13% Alcohol with pH of 3.6. Of the harvest, 26% was used for Pavillon Rouge du Margaux. 93 – 95 Pts
2016 Quintus – With a stunning shade of purple-red, a single sniff and you know Quintus truly knows how to craft a serious wine. Divine textures, fruits that dance on the palate, minerality, smoke, earth, licorice and. The wine was made from a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet, reaching 15% alcohol with a pH of 3.5. The harvest took place October 3 to October 20. 93 – 95 Pts

2016 Saint-Pierre – Dark, inky ruby in color, this wine is full bodied, concentrated, deep, long and focused. The fruit is precise, fresh and poised. The wine was produced from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. 93 – 95 Pts
2016 Sansonnet – Powerful, mouth filling, rich, opulent and fresh, there is intensity and concentration with flavorful bands of fat juiciness, licorice and black plums so ripe you’ll want to suck on the stone. You’re going to like this wine, its masterful essence will linger in your mind for hours. From a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, this is the best vintage of Sansonnet yet. I know I’ve said it before, but this time I really mean it! 93 – 95 Pts
2016 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc – White peach, honeysuckle, pie crust and lemon curd aromatics are all over the place. The wine is concentrated, the fruit is sweet and juicy, but a but more lift would have made this really rock. The wine was produced from a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Semillon, reaching 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.2. 94 – 94 Pts
2016 Suduiraut – With a deep yellow color, the wine is perfumed with honeyed pineapple, orange, apricot and nut aromas. The full bodied wine is sweet, rich, lusciously textured and loaded with honey and nuts. The wine was produced from blending 94% Semillon and 6% Sauvignon Blanc. Priced at €45.60, this is the same rate as it was last year. – 95 Pts
2016 Tronquoy Lalande – Tempting dark plum, blackberry and earth are available with little effort in this deeply colored, equally luxuriant wine. The fruit is bottomless, the tannins are smooth and there is a plushness, depth and purity to the fruit I have never seen before at Tronquoy Lalande. The finish has distinct intensity of flavor. Produced from a blend of 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place from September 27 to October 15. Clearly, this is the best wine ever produced at this estate! 93 – 95 Pts
