Chateau Pontet Canet and Alfred Tesseron are doing everything right these days. This Fifth Growth Pauillac estate is now of the hottest brands in Bordeaux. The quality continues to rise and so do prices. Regardless of the price increases, Pontet Canet could not be more popular with consumers. 2010 futures, for many Bordeaux wines have been tepid at best. Pontet Canet is one of the few bright spots. Even though prices took a large jump from their already expensive 2009 Bordeaux, consumers continued purchasing the wine.
There are not many branded Bordeaux wines that consumers buy year after year. Outside of the First Growths and a few of the top Right Bank wines, it’s an exclusive club. Due to the increases in quality and continuous promotional efforts of the entire team, Chateau Pontet Canet is now of the most popular Bordeaux wines being produced today.

The wines Tesseron is making today are much better than his earlier efforts. To see how far the estate has come in terms of quality, I tasted the third vintage produced at Pontet Canet by Tesseron. 1996 is known to be a strong vintage for the Cabernet Sauvignon based wines of the Medoc. How did Pontet Canet fare on its 15th birthday?
1996 Chateau Pontet Canet – Tobacco, earth, smoke and dark berries make up the perfume. The third vintage produced under the supervision of Alfred Tesserson is full bodied and filled with crunchy, chewy Cabernet Sauvignon. In a slightly firm style, this chunky wine ends with cassis and a hint of greenness. The wines being made by Tesseron today bear no resemblance to the earlier, pre 2003 vintages. 90 Pts
