Since Jean-Luc Zuger began running the show at Chateau Malescot St. Exupery in Margaux, the wines have continued improving. After decades of lackluster wines, the Margaux estate has produced one exciting wine after another. Most recently, their successful run of vintages includes several must have wines, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010 have all been stellar Bordeaux wines! It’s going to be difficult for wine lovers to pick a favorite between the more structured and powerful 2010 Malescot St. Exupery versus the exotic, opulent stylings of the sublime 2009. That is going to be a fun duo of Margaux wines to compare over the next several decades.

2010 Malescot St. Exupery – Inky, dark purple in color, this Margaux wine explodes from the glass with scents of fresh picked flowers, blackberry jam, vanilla, caramel, cassis, coffee and truffle aromas. In the mouth, this expansive Bordeaux wine is filled with sweet, ripe, plush tannins, opulent textures and a rich, ripe, round, opulent texture that finishes with a long, sweet, pure, blackberry jam finish. When asked which of his two most recent Bordeaux wines he likes best, the owner and wine maker Jean Luc Zuguer said, “I prefer the structure of the 2010 over the more exotic 2009.” 2010 Malescot St. Exupery was offered at 60 Euros. I liked this wine a lot. It’s a wine I purchased for my own cellar. 95-96 Pts

2009 Malescot St. Exupery is the color of black and purple ink. Complicated aromatics filled with black cherry, blueberry, truffle, licorice, blackberries and dark chocolate pop from the glass. This rich, opulent, flamboyant feels like pure satin is coating your mouth. The long finish ends with an array of black and blue fruits, chocolate and spice sensations. This wine merits attention for its sensual style and fair for the level of quality prices. 96 Pts
