The 2011 UGCB Union Grand Cru Bordeaux North American Tour starts next week in San Francisco. For Bordeaux wine lovers and consumers who just like wine, this is the best wine event of the year. This year, the focus is on 2008 Bordeaux wine. Having tasted these wines multiple times from barrel to bottle, (most recently last June in Bordeaux) 2008 is an outstanding vintage for Bordeaux wine. And the best part is; the majority of the wines remain well priced. Prior to the tasting, from 1::00-2:30, James Suckling is holding a seminar focusing on 8 Bordeaux wines including: Chateau Troplong-Mondot, Chateau Canon-La Gaffeliere, Chateau La Conseillante, Chateau Langoa-Barton, Chateau Malescot-St.-Exupery, Chateau Pavie-Macquin, Chateau Pichon-Longueville-Lalande, and Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte. The owners or directors of the chateaux will be appearing with James at the Seminar. Izak… It’ll be interesting for me too. I tasted several 08’s just after bottling in July 2010. It will be fun seeing which wines have improved and which wines are not showing quite as well.
Do you have any favorite 2008’s?
Valandraud (one of the best wines of the vintage for me!), Palmer (the same as Valandraud), Le Gay. Haven’t tasted others in October last year. Hope to catch up on some during and after primeur week, and in September this year when 25-30 Bx owners come to present 2010 and one older vintage (here majority will be 2008s, I’m sure).
Margaux commune in 2008 vintage wasn’t particulary strong during primeur tasting in April 2009, Pauillac, Pomerol and St.Estephe was better. I’m eager to hear if something has changed when wines are in bottle.
Those are all good wines. I’ll work on my notes from the UGC tasting today and will try to finish by tomorrow.
