Yes, some wines are still made in an old-school manner with too much concentration, over-ripeness, or a heavy oak influence. But today, the trend is clearly towards producing wines with appealing freshness, refinement, and purity. 2022 Angelus – St. Émilion Grand Cru – On the palate, the wine is refined, elegant, poised, and precise. The sensation of purity is almost unequaled. Finesse and power are readily apparent, with a vibrancy that allows for length, expansiveness, and energy. There is a boatload of concentration on the palate, but the focus is on its refinement, balance, and sophistication. The refreshing touch of mint and sea salt in the finish is the perfect accompaniment to the wine’s sensuous, velvety finish. As this ages, it is a candidate for an upgrade to triple digits. 2022 Angelus No 3 – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Fresh, fruity, and vibrant with an inviting open character, this is already perfect for near-term enjoyment. Medium-bodied with a core of sweet, bright, and light red fruits, it is ideal for ordering in cafes and bistros. You can savor it upon release and continue to enjoy it over the next decade. 2022 Ausone – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Aromatically complex, it is on the palate, with its incredible levels of depth and palate-staining richness that the wine begins to show its character. Picture continuous waves of powerful, perfectly ripe, concentrated black, red, and blue fruits drizzled over a rock quarry, with accents of licorice. spice, cocoa, salt, black pepper, orange rind, and mint fill every nook, and cranny of your palate. With all this weight and heft, the wine is vibrant, lifted, and energetic, which is no small feat! The wine blends 50% Cabernet Franc with 50% Merlot. 2022 Ausone Chapelle d’Ausone – St. Émilion Grand Cru – At first, you experience the intense floral aromas before the espresso, black raspberries, cherries, licorice, and a variety of spices awaken the nose. Medium-bodied, creamy, lush, and fresh, with a pronounced sense of minerality, the wine envelops your palate with chocolate, mint, licorice, and black cherries, before revealing salty, crushed rocks and stones at the finish. 2022 Badette – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Oaky in the nose, so allow it some air, or time in the decanter before all of its richly textured, luscious fruits on the palate provide their layers of chocolatey plums. licorice, and black cherries on the mid-palate and finish. 2022 Balestard La Tonnelle – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Espresso, licorice, smoke, cherries, and cocoa show in the nose. Lush, supple, fresh, and creamy, the black cherries with their salty chocolate in the finish hits the spot. You can enjoy this on release, or age it for more complexity. Drink from 2025-2040. 93 Pts
2022 Barde Haut – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Oceanic salts, truffles, smoke, flowers, licorice, and dark, red pit fruits show in the nose with a single swirl. The palate, with its layers of elegant, silky-textured fruits expresses a beautiful sense of purity to the fruits from the mid-palate, through to the finish. The lingering endnotes serve up ample freshness, length, and a refreshing, minty charm that entices you to take another sniff and sip, to experience it all over again. 2022 Beau-Sejour Becot – St. Émilion Grand Cru – I loved this from the barrel, and I am even happier to report that it is even better, now that it is bottled! The perfume is ethereal, with its bouquet of flowers, red, black, and blue fruits, licorice, and spice. On the palate, this is where the wine truly shines. Rich, plush, incredibly dense, sensuous, opulent, and elegant, the wine feels weightless, making it effortless to drink. The purity in the fruit, paired with its cashmere tannins, seamless finish, and layers of fruit, topped by salty, crushed stones, hits the 60-second mark and keeps on going. The wine blends 76% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. 2022 Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse – St. Émilion Grand Cru – The striking perfume, with its blast of flowers, dark cherries, plums, black raspberries, espresso, and sea salt demands your attention. 2022 Canon – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Aromatically, the wine pops with its floral bouquet coupled with notes of mint, crushed stones, red fruits, licorice, spice, and wild cherries. On the palate, the wine is perfectly poised with elegance, finesse, silky, freshness, sexiness, sensuality, and a tannic structure allowing the wine to age and evolve for 4-5 decades with ease. 2022 Canon Croix Canon – St. Émilion Grand Cru – You encounter flowers with a strong burst of mint before being greeted by cherries and sea salt aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, and brimming with vibrant, sweet cherries. The fruits are clean, pure, and elegant, finishing with a refreshing hint of mint. The year 2022 signifies a change here. Notably, for the first time, the blend comprises a majority of Cabernet Franc, with 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot. Drink from 2025-2040. 92 Pts
2022 Canon la Gaffeliere – St. Émilion Grand Cru – The vivid floral character directs the wine in the right direction. 2022 Cheval Blanc – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Mind-bowing in every sense of the word, this has everything you could ask for in a wine, and more! The perfume is striking with its display of flowers, black cherries, saffron, black raspberries, plums, smoke, licorice, and a background note of citrus. The sensuous palate is even better, building in intensity as the wine lingers. Silky, sexy, concentrated, and perfectly balanced, the wine is seamless. The extraordinary sense of purity in the fruit makes you take another sip just to taste it all over again. The finish sees the 60-second mark and, without a care in the world, leaving you with continuous waves of opulent fruits that linger long after the wine has left the glass. 2022 Clos Badon Thunevin – St. Émilion Grand Cru – With some oak that still needs to meld into the wine, once past the espresso notes you find a wealth of flowers, chocolate, plums, licorice, and black cherries. From there, the wine focuses on its elegant, lush, silky-textured fruits on the palate, leaving you with spice, dark chocolate, plums and cherries on the backend. 2022 Clos Dubreuil – St. Émilion Grand Cru – The wine really shines on the palate with its layers of polished, vibrant, round, fruits. While there is still oak that needs to be better integrated, the wine delivers its opulent nature with ease due to all of the deep, ripe, sweet fruits. 2022 Clos Fourtet – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Opulent, velvety, silky, and lush, this is fabulous from the very beginning. The perfume, with its notes of flowers, licorice, smoke, black cherries, blue fruits, spice, salt, and oyster shell, is spellbinding. On the palate, the wine is deep, fleshy, unctuous, and yet also light, vibrant, and energetic. Concentrated and complex, the strong mineral influence on the finish is intense and compelling. This is the first vintage where the parcels of Grandes Murailles were integrated into Clos Fourtet. The wine blends 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. 2022 Clos Saint Julien – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Salty-edged cherries, plums, crushed stones, spice and chocolate fill the nose, and palate here. The wine has depth, concentration, and length, as well as a strong sense of minerality, and freshness that expands as it lingers. Give it a few years in the cellar and it is going to be even better. 2022 Clos St. Martin – St. Émilion Grand Cru – In competition for the most sensuous wine in St. Emilion, this vintage is all that and more. With an intense floral display, you also find black cherries, licorice, smoke, spice, espresso, and cinnamon in the perfume. On the palate, the wine closes the deal with its silk and velvet, palate-caressing delivery of perfectly ripe black plums and sweet cherries with a chocolate edge that lingers. 2022 Clos de Sarpe – St. Émilion Grand Cru – I like what’s going on here. Now, you find more intensity, as well as a softness in the previously strong tannins. The wine is rich, powerful, mineral-driven, and packed with multiple layers of lushly-textured fruits. Give it time to come together. It is worth the wait. On the palate, the wine is fresh, creamy, and mineral-driven so you find a nice touch of crushed rocks adding complexities to the mid-palate and in the finish. 2022 Corbin – St. Émilion Grand Cru – All it takes is the initial sniff, and sip before you’re hooked. If the nose, with its flowers, licorice, red pit fruits, and marine influences doesn’t move you, the palate, with its silky-freshness, creamy, sexy tannins, and perfectly ripe, sweet fruits is going to get you. 2022 Couvent des Jacobins – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Deep, and dark in color, and flavor, with layers of black fruits, espresso, and chocolate on the palate, as well as in the aromatic profile. 2022 Couvent des Jacobins Calicem – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Loads of chocolate, licorice, espresso, peppery spice, and black pit fruit aromatics are all over the place. On the palate, the wine is rich, and ripe, with layers of sweet, luscious, black, with blue fruits in the polished finish. There is still some oak needing to be resolved on the palate, which will hopefully come in time, when the wine will merit a higher score. Drink from 2027-2042. 93 Pts
2022 Croix de Beausejour – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Medium-bodied, fresh, sweet, and fruity, with a core of light, red berries on the palate, and finish. This is perfect for early drinking pleasure while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. Drink from 2025-2032. 91 Pts
2022 Croix de Labrie – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Bottled black cherry liqueur is what you find here. There is a depth of flavor, seductive textures, chocolate, espresso, spice box and an array of sexy fruits that keep on going in the long finish. Hedonistic in style, if opulence is what you are looking for, your search is over. You can enjoy this young, or age it for more complexity, This is my favorite vintage ever produced here. The wine blends 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Cabernet Franc. This is the first vintage with this much Cabernet in the blend, which added to the freshness in the mid-palate, and finish.
