2020 white Bordeaux wine performed quite well this year. That is not always the case when the red wines are also good as fans of dry white Bordeaux know all too well. There are many years when the white wines turn out to be great, with fresh, racy characteristics, while the red wine grapes have difficulties ripening, most recently, 2017 2014, 2013, and 2011 for example.
And yet, 2020 is quite good for both red and white Bordeaux. With the 2020 Bordeaux vintage it is even more interesting because normally, the hot, dry vintages do not favor dry white Bordeaux. But that is not the case this year as the white wines manage to show freshness, aromatic complexity, and concentration, as well as ripeness and good acidity in the fruit.
And this is not only in Pessac Leognan but in other appellations where white wine grapes are planted. I am a big fan of the white wine coming from the Medoc this year. The wines are ripe, sweet, crisp, juicy, and fresh and a few offer that special racy acidity that is found in the best, 2020 dry white Bordeaux wines. It is important to note that in this year, growers had success with their dry white wines all over the Left Bank, and even in the Right Bank as well, as you will see in this report.
Harvesting for dry White Bordeaux wine grapes began about August 20, with a few growers starting even earlier with the Sauvignon Blanc, making 2020 one of the earliest for white wines vignerons have seen in quite a while. For those of you that are keeping track, this was over one week earlier than in 2019.
The 2020 white wine harvest took place in good conditions, with pleasant temperatures, sunny days, and those much desired cool nights. Semillon picking continued until early September, which was perfect, as this part of the harvest was completed just before it began to rain.
