2022 Pomerol Wine, Vintage Report and Buying Guide

2022 Pomerol wines are gorgeous. At their best, they are aromatic, opulent, concentrated, flamboyant, elegant, and most importantly, vibrant with freshness. Their unique character is due to the unusual coupling of high sugar levels meshed with a low pH. While you have it in spades with 2022 Pomerol, not is not something you see often.

Ronan Laborde Chateau Clinet“2022 Pomerol can be characterized by its perfume and sapidity. The wines are incredibly silky. They are gentle, with freshness, and length. It is a style of wine we have never experienced in Bordeaux before.”

Due to the warm and extremely dry growing season, vineyards on the plateau, with water retentive clay soils preformed extremely well for both Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The berries, with their small size, thick skins and high juice to skin ratio provided natural concentration which added to the character of 2022 Pomerol. While 2022 Pomerol is a vintage born from the drought conditions, the amount of sunlight was also crucial.

Christian Mouiex – Chateau Trotanoy“July 349 hours sun, 348 hours of sun in August, that is 11 hours a day of sun. It is the sun that made 2022, not the drought for us.”

Fortunately, enough rain fell in June, along with a tiny bit of rain in July to nourish the vines, allowing the fruits to reach maturity.

The extreme dry conditions allowed growers, under very stringent conditions to irrigate vines. At the end of the day, (or should I say growing season?), very little irrigation took place. To irrigate 2022 Pomerol the following rules were in place.

Growers were obligated to inform the Pomerol Syndicat no less than 48 hours in advance of irrigation. The information required included the parcel and size of the area needing to be irrigated as well as the specific grape variety involved and how the water would be dispersed. The amount of water was limited to 5,500 kilograms per hectare. Irrigation was limited to vines with berries used to produce wine. Young vines were exempt from irrigation. Irrigation was only allowed between July 20,2022 and August 15, 2022.

At the end of the day, not many vineyards chose to, or were able to irrigate. But, it is interesting as well as important to note, as it is a clear recognition of climate change. With this in mind, growers recognized the need to adapt to the new normal with 2022 Bordeaux.

Neomie Durantou – Chateau L’Eglise Clinet“It is evident that the vines are learning to adapt to warmer and drier, drought conditions. But we needed to do our part as well. We deleafed, but very conservatively, as it helps the vineyard become more homogenous during the growing cycle.”

2022 Pomerol was harvested in beautiful conditions with growers starting to pick Merlot from early to mid-September. Some growers began their young vine Merlot as early as September 1. The grapes from the better terroirs, (Those with water-retentive soils) were coming in with very high sugar levels, which were in most cases balanced by ample acidities. However, picking dates were crucial, as vignerons needed ripeness, as well as freshness.

Jacques Thienpot Le Pin – We spent a longtime harvesting searching for the perfect level of ripeness. On some days we harvested for 2 hours, others longer. It was picking at the right moment that made everything work with 2022.”

The Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon was brought in shortly after the Merlot. By the time the fruit was harvested, it was clear that 2022 had produced several stunning Right Bank wines.

Olivier Berrouet – Petrus “The picking date was paramount with 2022. The level of vibrancy was unexpected.”
